A strong nine race card has been assembled for Doomben on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:53) Tab Mdn Plate 1200m
14 Kusama (Bet Now: $8.00) is the filly with a strong form line leading into this I feel. Brian Smith trains this filly, who ran last Wednesday at Eagle Farm where she was a short priced elect and while she was comfortably beaten, she was comfortably beaten by a good one I think in Vivid Fortress. Think that form will hold up here.
1 Angus The Black (Bet Now: $4.40) is a key threat for me. Tony Gollan trains this three year old, who has been pretty good in two runs back from a spell. Latest came last Wednesday at Eagle Farm where he was back off the speed and chased hard all the way, getting close in the end. Think a rise in trip would suit so remaining at 1200m is the knock but he’ll be strong at the end.
Up to 1200m should very much suit the Barry Lockwood trained 16 Oxford Miss (Bet Now: $8.00). Ran over 1050m at Toowoomba last time out where she got back in the run and chased strongly in the straight when third to Spinning Spirit, beaten a couple of lengths in a good effort. Has upside and I think the big tick is the rise to 1200m.
Race 2. (13:28) Ascot Childcare & Kindy-bm80 2200m
2 Ilwendo (Bet Now: $2.45) to bounce back here. If you were on him last Saturday, you would have been disappointed with his effort behind Eric The Eel, but pilot error didn’t help. Michael Cahill took a sit instead of holding up because this horse does race best when out of trouble on speed. Jockey upgrade with Brad Stewart to steer, he should hold the lead and prove hard to get past.
1 Quality Seeker (Bet Now: $1.80) has been up forever it seems but gee he’s racing well for the Maher/Eustace stable and is loving it when he races in Queensland, bolting up at his past two starts over 2200m at Eagle Farm. Don’t think he has upside left but really, only has to hold his form to go close to beating these.
3 Boom Boom Epic (Bet Now: $11.00) up to 2200m can spark some improvement. Hasn’t done a great deal in three runs back from a spell, the latest coming over 1800m at Eagle Farm and wasn’t too bad in defeat behind Benfica Princess, a big improvement from the opening two runs. Gets in well after the claim and has more upside than most.
Race 3. (14:07) Nuturf Hcp 1350m
3 Rory’s Reward (Bet Now: $5.00) is a big watch here. David Vandyke trains this youngster, who is on debut. He trialled last week at the Sunny Coast on a borderline bottomless track and he bolted up despite not being 100% happy in the conditions it seemed. Always have to respect the stable when they produce one on debut. Watch the market.
1 Tumbler Ridge (Bet Now: $3.90) can bounce back here. Impressive win two back at Eagle Farm before racing there again two weeks ago where he was back in the run and pulling, which I think took away his finale when third to surprise winner Mishani Epic. Hopefully the tempo is more genuine this time around and he can relax better in the run.
2 Mishani Epic (Bet Now: $4.80) is a son of Real Saga for Les Ross who was big odds two weeks ago at Eagle Farm but looked to be going sweetly out the back before angling into clear air and he finished right over the top for an impressive win. The negative is that he was $51 so it was unexpected. Can he repeat the dose on a tighter track?
Race 4. (14:47) Chandon Mdn Plate 1350m
4 Toucan Sam (Bet Now: $7.50) is knocking on the door to break the maiden tag and I think that can happen here. Ran over 1400m at the Sunny Coast just under a month back when off the speed and trying hard to get there. Just missed when second to Grey Top, beaten a lip. Back to 1350m is a little query, but he has the form to take this out.
14 Blackboots (Bet Now: $2.90) is a daughter of Wandjina for David Vandyke who comes to this race off the back of a debut at this track/distance when near the speed throughout and tried hard but was clearly no match for Beachbreak. Has the racing pattern to be more than competitive here, especially if being on speed is an advantage.
8 Monster Of Power (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Brian Smith trained gelding that is having his third start. Both career outings have come at the Sunny Coast, the latest coming around two weeks ago when slightly unlucky but for the most part, had his chance when fourth to Endless Mystery. He’s got upside to come and this isn’t a strong maiden overall.
Race 5. (15:27) Lexus Plate (c3) 1615m
Going with 9 Standing Ovation (Bet Now: $7.00). Mick Lakey trains this mare, who comes through the Watch The Cat race from a fortnight back at Eagle Farm. Just got a bit too far back in the run but didn’t mind the way she finished her race off late. Like that Brad Stewart goes back on and can sit much closer in the run from the good gate. Happy to be in her corner.
7 Watch The Cat (Bet Now: $2.80) is a son of Time Thief for Barry Lockwood who had the first run for the new stable at Eagle Farm two weeks ago in a very similar race where he was really well specked at longer odds and the bets were landed. Got the A1 run in transit and finished too good. If he improves off that, has to go close again.
2 Metamorphic (Bet Now: $8.00) can be an improver at odds. Comes through the Watch The Cat race two weeks ago at Eagle Farm where he was back in the run and never really a winning threat but didn’t mind the way he finished his race off behind the Lockwood runner. Like him up to the mile and is a knockout chance for sure at odds.
Race 6. (16:07) Millers Swim School (bm72) 1050m
10 Niedorp (Bet Now: $2.25) looks so well placed here by Tony Gollan. Quality filly that resumes after a good Spring prep, which saw her go to Melbourne and she was far from disgraced in good races, including during Cup Week at Flemington. Loved the way she trialled behind speedy stablemate Sugar Boom and gets run of the race from the gate.
3 Ramtastic (Bet Now: $7.50) is a big watch here. Six weeks between runs for Kelly Schweida since racing over 1400m at Eagle Farm when down the track in a real on pace dominated affair won by Peppi La Few, who is flying and won at the Gold Coast on Friday to tick the form off again. Back to 1050m, do they ride him forward? Watch the market.
14 Cailini (Bet Now: $20.00) is a little while between wins but her best is certainly good enough to be around the mark here. Comes through the Papa Jo race from two weeks ago at Eagle Farm where she was back and wide, never really getting into the race at all, but was still sound in defeat. Running out of chances but gets a great chance.
Race 7. (16:47) Kirin Hcp 1200m
1 Oh Five Glory (Bet Now: $6.00) for me. This filly has been up a fair while it seems but gee the Hulbert stable have her going well. Comes through the Aquis Jewel at the Gold Coast when near the speed and battled away really well in defeat when third to The Odyssey. The depth here is nowhere near as strong. Just has to hold her form to go close.
5 Jeweliana (Bet Now: $7.50) is a well bred daughter of All Too Hard for Steve O’Dea who resumed over 1200m at the Gold Coast where she was a short priced elect. Got back in the run and spotted them a start but was more than sound in defeat, finishing second, but at the same time, was a beaten favourite. She can take this out off her form from last prep.
6 Shadow Of Time (Bet Now: $23.00) is a very interesting runner. Stewart Barr trains this three year old, who comes here off the back of a dominant win over 1000m at the Sunny Coast against the older horses, aided by a lovely ride from Dale Smith. Good test here against some likely types, but this guy hasn’t done much wrong in his short career to date.
Race 8. (17:23) Tab Hcp 1615m
Rob Heathcoate has 9 Plitvice (Bet Now: $6.00) flying. Comes back to the mile after racing over 1800m two weeks ago where he got back in the run from the wide gate but didn’t mind the way he finished off when third to Benfica Princess. Gets a senior jock on, back to 1600m should be fine and if he can take advantage of the barrier, he’ll prove hard to beat.
4 Get Stuck In (Bet Now: $1.80) has got plenty of upside left and I think he can win again. Very good first up behind Emerald Kingdom before racing over 1500m at Eagle Farm where he was pretty much gifted a soft lead and from the 1000m onwards, it was race over. He bolted up. Think he’ll better with something to chase and if that’s the case here, gee he’ll take some beating.
7 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $10.00) looks a leading chance. Was 1200m to 1500m two weeks ago at Eagle Farm where he had the dream sit on the back of Get Stuck In and tried hard, but was no match for the change up speed the Gollan runner produced. Think that run will bring him right on for this and is clearly a leading contender.
Race 9. (18:02) Xxxx Dry Hcp (c6) 1200m
Toughest test to date here for 10 Moonshine Lady (Bet Now: $1.65). Progressive mare for Team Hulbert that is 3/3 this time in, the latest coming three weeks ago when leading throughout and landing some big bets as a short priced elect. She’s been very well handled by the stable but no place to hide here in a race which has good depth.
4 Macewen (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Tony Gollan trained gelding who ran two weeks ago at Eagle Farm and while in the form guide it says he ran last, beaten close to 100m, he did nearly fall on the turn and how he stayed up was a miracle. Just scrap that run and go back to the first up run here where he was very good behind Manaya.
2 Langhro (Bet Now: $10.00) is worth another chance I think. Resumed over 1200m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where he was part of a fierce speed battle and really, was entitled to drop out and run last, but didn’t turn it up and was okay in defeat behind Boomtown Lass. If he gets a more economical run nearer the speed this time around, he can take this out.
