Trainer Danny O’Brien has blamed one of the countries biggest three-year-old races as the issue for Australia’s staying ranks.
O’Brien talking on RSN this morning said the single biggest impediment on the countries born and bred stayers is the G1 Victoria Derby.
“The single biggest impediment to stayers in this country is the VRC Derby. It torches too many of our promising stayers. the prize-money is so big that it’s difficult not to run but the attrition rate is so big.”
The lucrative prize money of the Victoria Derby he said is too big of a draw card for the countries promising stayers but the distance and timing of the race means the attrition rate is big and the horses don’t recover.
