The Adelaide Carnival continues this Saturday at Morphettville where it is Chairmans Stakes Day, keeping mind that races one and nine will be run on the course proper and not the Parks track. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail for the Parks track is out three metres for the entire circuit. For the course proper, the rail is out ten metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out two metres from the 2000m-1800m; Out eight metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:40) M&j Chickens Breeders' Stakes 1200m
2 Crown Mint (Bet Now: $7.00) is a son of Hallowed Crown for Gordon Richards that has been kept on ice, having not raced since scoring a super win over 1300m at Sandown after covering ground in the run. Returns home and he looked very good in a recent trial here behind Mileva. Looks above average and confident he can take this out.
Keen to see 6 Charm School (Bet Now: $2.45). Anthony Freedman trains this filly, who debuted over 1200m at Sandown on Easter Monday where she was one of the first off the bit and looked in a bit of trouble but the last 100m, she really knuckled down and was impressive in getting the job done. Just has to run up to that and she goes close to making it 2/2.
4 Ichibansan (Bet Now: $19.00) has his share of talent but hasn’t really had a proper opportunity to showcase it. Ran over 1250m on the Parks track two weeks ago where it was pretty much a barrier trial for him, getting no luck in the straight and should have finished much closer behind Grandslam. If the rub of the green goes his way, he can fill a first four spot and wouldn’t be totally shocked if he won.
Race 2. (13:16) Anzac Day (bm64) 1000m
5 Larkham (Bet Now: $3.60) can bounce back here. Forget he went around three weeks ago behind Garvoc. He took charge of Tourneur, hunting through to lead and was the first horse beat. Too bad to be true, and the vet found he was lame post race, so clearly there were excuses. Off his win the start prior, he beats these I think.
4 Fortune Follows (Bet Now: $6.00) is an Akeed Mofeed three year old for Will Clarken that resumes. This guy hasn’t raced since the Summer when starting his career with a two run prep. Debuted with an impressive win over 1200m at Morphettville before going to Gawler when a disappointing fourth to Picargo. Was reportedly going to be sold to Hong Kong but he remains with Will Clarken and looked well enough in a recent trial here.
9 Sellix (Bet Now: $14.00) is an Alex Stra trained filly that was very good two back behind Garvoc before going to Strathalbyn last Wednesday where she took a sit and tried hard to wear down the leader Tubby Two Tracks, but that horse kicked on the turn and clung on in a blanket finish. With the Garvoc run in mind, she’s a knockout chance here if she can get on speed without doing too much work.
Race 3. (13:51) M&b Stewart's 62nd Anniv-bm60 1250m
4 Two Odd Sox (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Shayne Cahill trained galloper that rarely runs a bad race. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago in a much harder race when on speed and fought on pretty well in defeat when third to impressive winner Jacobite Prince. This is one of the easier races he has contested in some time so leaning his way.
3 Gougers (Bet Now: $4.20) is a little while between runs for John Hyam, having not raced since March 21 over 1400m here when a solid third to Rikibobby after getting the run of the race behind the leader. He tried hard but couldn’t finish it off. Think back to 1250m with fresh legs is a decent enough set up so watch the market given it’s his first run in over a month.
1 Nothing Needed (Bet Now: $4.20) is a former Queenslander that had his first run for Will Clarken two weeks ago here over 1000m here where it was pretty much a barrier trial for him. Got back in the run and in an on pace dominated affair, he couldn’t get into the contest behind Seemingly Discreet. Up in trip, fitter, giving him another chance.
Race 4. (14:26) Peggy Mckinnon's 100th (bm78) 1300m
Hard to beat here is the Michael Hickmott trained 4 Sky Punch (Bet Now: $4.20), who was a narrow second over the mile on Adelaide Cup Day before coming back to 1400m on the Parks track a few weeks ago and with that tough 1600m run under the belt, even with the weight, he was too good. Like him here and should go close.
5 Diplomatic Measure (Bet Now: $4.80) is racing really well this time in for the McEvoy camp. Thought it was a good win two weeks ago over 1400m here. Sat on speed throughout with the big weight, tried hard and was there to be run down but showed good ticker in the straight and clung on. Gets weight relief and back to 1300m, and is hard fit, so I like the set up.
For wider multiples, I’d put in 12 Stragun (Bet Now: $61.00). Not the most reliable galloper going around, but if things fall into place for him, he can be dangerous late at a big price. Ran over 1200m three weeks ago on the course proper here and just never got into the race from the back behind Kenyan Wonder. Can fill a first four spot with luck.
Race 5. (15:01) H C Nitschke Stakes 1400m
8 Night Express (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Henry Dwyer trained filly that was a close up third in what I thought was a good race at Sale won by Night Express before going to this track/distance two weeks ago where she was backed as if unbeatable and once Neindorf found the front and controlled things, it was game over. Ran sharp late splits in winning. Can she take a sit and be just as effective in a harder race.
6 Balaabel (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Team McEvoy filly that should measure up here. Resumed in what looked a strong benchmark race at Murray Bridge. Was back, wide with cover, before peeling wider and producing a brilliant finale, clocking some of the best splits of the meeting, in winning well. Horrible gate, so likely gives them a start, but will be strong late.
4 Done By Me (Bet Now: $14.00) looks to have returned in really good order for Philip Stokes. Loved the way she found the line first up at Mornington behind Jamaican Hurry before going to Sandown where she had no luck at all and should have finished closer behind Lunakorn. She’s a filly who I think races best when allowed to build momentum.
Race 6. (15:36) Tab (bm78) 1000m
Really keen here on 13 Appalachian (Bet Now: $8.50) for David Jolly. Resumed over 1000m at Murray Bridge…well, you can say resumed, but it was pretty much another barrier trial for him. Wherever Crowther looked to get clear, the gap closed and it was just an absolute horror watch. Trial leading in was outstanding and I think with clear air this time around, he goes awfully close.
9 Seemingly Discreet (Bet Now: $3.20) is a smart filly for Phillip Stokes that I thought was a good thing at this track/distance two weeks ago off the back of an electric jumpout. Had to cop pressure on speed but slid clear at the top of the straight and still held a safe margin to the line. Harder here, but I think she’ll be even better with a sit.
Huge watch here on 12 Francisca (Bet Now: $18.00), a former Steve O’Dea trained mare that is now with Will Clarken, and we know the stable has a great record with these tried horses. She was a bit of a non winner in Queensland, but now in SA, new environment, she looked very slick in a Morphettville jumpout last Tuesday. Watch the market.
Race 7. (16:11) Fest. Of Racing 2-16 May-bm68 1400m
Phillip Stokes has a pretty handy three year old on his hands here in 5 Jacobite Prince (Bet Now: $3.50). Was just a run when he resumed over 1250m here before remaining at the same track/distance, was ridden positively on speed and he was far too good, showing his true colours with a dominant. Don’t see rising to 1400m being an issue and is the one to beat.
9 Poysed To Rein (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Team Jolly trained mare that was close up three weeks ago behind Kenyan Wonder before backing up a week later here at this track/distance and closed off well from the back when third to Lucky Flipper in a race where the backmarkers couldn’t get into the contest. Ready to win again I’d suggest.
12 Miss Brixton (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Helmet mare for Team McEvoy that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since November 2 over the mile on the course proper here when down the track behind Exalted Dee but was looking for the paddock. Been given a good break and looked solid enough in a recent trial, so I’d watch the market because she can sprint well fresh.
Race 8. (16:46) Holdfast Ins. City Of Adelaide 1400m
1 Haunted (Bet Now: $5.50) looks to be flying. Two runs back from a spell have been excellent, resuming down the Flemington straight when an eye catcher late behind Fabergino before going to the Hareeba when back and wide, surging hard late despite laying in when a close up fourth to Diamond Effort, who won next start to tick that form out. Hard fit now, he’s the safe option.
Fitter and up to 1400m are two big ticks for the Team McEvoy gelding 2 Vinland (Bet Now: $5.00), who was a notable drifter in betting when resuming two weeks ago over 1200m at Caulfield and I thought he battled away pretty well in defeat given it was his first run in over six months. Second up syndrome maybe? But has a good second up record and up to 1400m I like.
4 A Shin Rook (Bet Now: $14.00) is a son of Heart’s Cry for Anthony Freedman that is first up. Hasn’t raced since the Kilmore Cup back in November, which was run at Seymour, and he ran a very good second to Al Passem against a slow tempo. Recent jumpouts have been good and while it took a while for him to find his feet in Australia, he seems to be properly settled.
Race 9. (17:25) Chairman's Stakes 2035m
2 Dalasan (Bet Now: $1.65) is the local star that is hard fit and has the runs on the board. Can he stretch his brilliance to 2000m? He stretched it to 1800m three weeks ago in the Port Adelaide Guineas and he gave them a spanking under Stubby. That was a truly run 1800m and he was strong, so off that, think 2000m is okay for him.
I had penned 1 Warning (Bet Now: $4.00) after his Derby, convinced he wasn’t going any good. Yes, the Derby win was on a bottomless track, but I think he is better on firmer footing, which is what he gets here for the first time this prep. Off his efforts in Sydney, couldn’t back with confidence, but he’s the proven stayer here and has to be given another chance.
11 Rock Steady (Bet Now: $101.00) lacks the class of some of these but what he does have is the hard 2000m run under the belt so that’s a big tick for him leading into this. Phillip Stokes trains this three year old, who was really good late in a 1600m maiden at Murry Bridge two back before going to 2050m at Strathalbyn and while the win was narrow, it had merit given he made a sustained run. One for multiples.
