Nine races will be run and won at Randwick on Saturday, headlined by the Winter cameo of star galloper Classique Legend in the Bob Charley AO Stakes (1100m), the feature race. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
June Stakes 🏆: View the Field for the Bob Charley AO Stakes
Race 1. (11:25) Castelvecchio @ Arrowfield Hcp 1400m
7 Zoumist (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is a Gerald Ryan trained filly who looks talented. Far from disgraced on debut at Canterbury when fifth to subsequent Stakes winner September Run before going to Kembla where she got back to near last in the run before coming widest and she rounded them impressively and not surprising, she ran the best late splits of the race. Has the 1400m run under the belt and stable is firing with their youngsters.
4 Oregon (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) should love the rise to 1400m for the Snowden camp. Debuted last Wednesday over 1250m at Canterbury when back near last on the fence but sliced his way through the field and found the line strongly to finish third. Off that, should eat up 1400m here, as well as the bigger track. Can sit much closer in the run as well.
2 Jeronimos (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is the interesting runner. Son of Contributer for James Cummings that according to the market had three legs when he ran at Newcastle last start but despite the lack of friends in the market, he chased a strong speed and was too good in an impressive win, with the time stacking up well relative to the day. Can measure up for sure.
Race 2. (12:00) Quincy Seltzer (bm74) 1800m
5 Money Magic (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is a Mark Newnham trained filly that should appreciate the step up to 1800m. Ran over 1550m on the Kenso track last time out and closed off pretty well late in the piece behind Viren, looking like a filly that wants further, which she gets here, and the tick over trial at Canterbury was quite good.
2 Kirwan’s Lane (Bet Now: $3.60 TOP ODDS) is racing really well at the moment for John O’Shea and should take some beating here. Ran over 1900m last Wednesday at Canterbury when put into a lovely spot just off the speed by Bowman and once he shoved into clear air at the top of the straight, it was race cover. He was helped by the fence in run bias, but is racing well and finds a winnable Saturday race.
8 Divine Eleven (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) looks to be a working progress for the Matty Dunn team. Finally got the maiden win out of the way two back over 1400m at Kembla before going to 1500m at Newcastle where he was a bit flat footed when the sprint went on, but he picked up and was really good late. 1800m should be okay and gets a lovely run from the gate.
Race 3. (12:35) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1100m
11 Princess Cordelia (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) is a previous Highway winner and I reckon Mitch Beer has her around the mark for another crack. Slow to recover first up at Warwick Farm when ridden far too warm behind Jay Jay D’Ar. Then was freshened up back to 1000m at Albury and produced a really good split between the 600m-200m, but just knocked up late. Hard fit now, back up to 1100m, sitting off a good speed, she’s worth an each way ticket.
9 Keen Power (Bet Now: $3.70 TOP ODDS) is the one with the most progression out of these. Resumed in a Highway here two weeks and was one of a number of unlucky runners in the race, getting held up at a vital stage before getting clear late and finding the line nicely. Gets J Mac on and from the wide gate, should get clear air and be strong late.
Paul Smith should always be respected when he brings one for the Highway so I’m including 10 Lolly Dolly (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS), who is 2/2 this time in, both on her home track at Coffs Harbour, the latest over 1200m when lumping 60kg and she gave her rivals a spanking. Good test here, but she’s flying and deserves a crack at a Highway.
Race 4. (13:10) Schweppes (bm78) 2400m
11 The Guru (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is a handy up and comer for Theresa Bateup that won narrowly but in good style two back over 2000m at Kembla before racing over 2000m here a fortnight ago and he overachieved I thought in a really good effort behind Stockman, finishing third. Racing well, tough, in form…hard to beat I suggest.
Can 8 Re Edit (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) hold her form? Not sure where that run at Rosehill from three weeks back came from because prior, she looked like she was heading for the breeding barn, but at Rosehill, she sat back, ridden cold, and savaged the line to just miss out on picking up Costello. If she repeats that effort here, she goes close.
2400m is definitely what 7 Loveseat (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is looking for. Ran over 2000m here two weeks ago and was never really a winning chance but thought she made up okay ground late in the piece behind High Opinion and for mine has always looked a mare that wants 2400m, which she gets to here, and is one of the key chances.
Race 5. (13:50) Calyx @ Coolmore Aust (bm78) 1200m
Throw at the stumps in the shape of 12 The Lion (Bet Now: $35.00), who steps up to 1200m after racing over 1100m on the Kenso track last time out when back off the speed and working home pretty well late in the piece. He is proven at Randwick on wet ground, so that’s the big tick for him, and he has a gate to do no work and launch late.
5 Burning Crown (Bet Now: $2.70) seems to have come back in super order for Sue Grills. Loved the way he toughed it out to win first up at Warwick Farm on a testing track before going to the Kenso track a few weeks ago when wide throughout and was quite game in defeat I thought behind Dirty Work. He’s come back well and the Randwick 1200m should be fine.
9 Up Trumpz (Bet Now: $5.00) is worth another chance. Joe Cleary trained sprinter who was really good first up behind subsequent Stakes winner Dirty Work before racing again on the Kenso track where he got a bit too far back and couldn’t come on, finishing fifth. Think a rise in trip definitely suits and third up, should be hard fit now.
Race 6. (14:30) Vale Darby Mccarthy (bm78) 1200m
Jump and run set up is A1 for 2 Wandabaa (Bet Now: $5.00) and I think she’s a mare who finds a really weak Saturday race. Sustained speed from the front saw her win on the Kenso track and despite being out of petrol tickets late, she was too good, just. 1200m is a query, but has the right racing pattern, and the claim for Louise Day certainly helps.
13 Voila (Bet Now: $16.00) can improver on a firmer deck for Chris Waller. Had good specking at odds when resuming at this track/distance two weeks ago where she was nearer the inside, and loomed for a stride or two, but couldn’t go on with it behind Blazing Miss She’ll come right on from that and has a good second up record.
The best version of 10 Slow Burn (Bet Now: $16.00) is certainly capable of winning but gee it’s been a long time since she has showed that. Comes through the Hawkesbury Crown when not beaten far but well held by Sweet Scandal. Given a freshen up and her tick over trial at Randwick was okay without jumping up and down. One for multiples I think.
Race 7. (15:10) Bob Charley Ao June Stakes 1100m
You have to think class alone gets 1 Classique Legend (Bet Now: $2.50) home. High class four year old who was due to go to Hong Kong but remains in Australia with Les Bridge and all things being equal, will line up in The Everest. Hasn’t raced since the Golden Eagle, but looked great in a trial win last week at Canterbury and 1100m first up, on dry ground, he looks the one.
Matty Dunn has 6 Snitz (Bet Now: $7.00) in career best form. Four weeks between runs since racing over 1200m here when chasing the speed and drew clear late to win impressively and make it 2/2 this prep in winning the Takeover Target. Fast run 1100m should be no drama and like that the stable have got a plan in place and have stuck to it.
7 Care To Think (Bet Now: $35.00) is one of the bigger queries on the program. Matty Dunn trains this gelding, who promised so much a couple of years ago but hasn’t really done a great deal in recent preps. Can you trust what he produced in his trials, because to the eye, he has looked outstanding. Definitely watch the market with him.
Race 8. (15:50) Drinkwise Mile 1600m
I think off the trial, you have to have something on 3 Order Again (Bet Now: $19.00). The trial pervs will be all over this guy because he was absolutely trucking in the Canterbury trial, his first public hitout for Chris Waller after formerly being with Brian Smith. Bit of headgear tinkering and does no work from the gate. Just looks silly odds.
11 Dealmaker… (Bet Now: $10.00) could I back him to win? No, but concede he’s racing well. Back to 1400m was a negative here two weeks back because he just lacked the turn of foot, but stayed on and was more than sound in defeat behind Man Of Peace. His stats say he is good on wet ground, but I think on firmer footing, he’s more effective. Up in trip definitely suits.
Going to give 12 Etana (Bet Now: $14.00) another chance. She was really good first up at the Sunny Coast over 1400m before going to the Wayne Wilson over the mile where to the eye, she was flat, but hearing jockey Mark Du Plessis last Tuesday, he said the mare felt like she wanted further already, so remaining at 1600m is a query, but getting fitter and at her best, she’ll take some beating.
Race 9. (16:25) Tab (bm78) 1600m
Think there is more to come with 1 Opacity (Bet Now: $3.40) for the John O’Shea team. Ran over 1500m here a fortnight back when Bowman rode a 12/10 race on the gelding and despite being strongly challenged by Miss Einstein, on the line, he was comfortably holding her. He’s got upside and the extra 100m will only help his cause.
10 Greek Hero (Bet Now: $6.00) looks to have his fair share of ability. Loved the way he toughed it out at his Australian debut when winning at Kembla Grange before racing over 1500m here and was far from disgraced in defeat behind Opacity. Remained at 1500m last time so up to the mile I do like and is another with upside.
4 Guise (Bet Now: $16.00) can run a much improved race at odds from a soft gate. Chris Waller trained mare who is better suited over a bit further, but she has a bit of quality about her when right. Resumed on the Kenso track and worked to the line pretty well I thought behind Spirit Ridge. Gets a soft run from the draw and will be strong at the end.
