It isn’t ever publicised with the hype of the U.S. Triple Crown, but Canada has it’s own Triple Crown and this morning the 2nd leg was run and won by a horse who would be banned from racing in Australia.
MIGHTY HEART (Dramedy-Emma’s Bullseye) won Canada’s biggest race and first leg of its Triple Crown, the Queen’s Plate on dirt over 2000m two weeks ago by a widening 7 lengths leading all the way.
That was at Woodbine. The future champion racehorse Northern Dancer won this race in 1966 before winning the Gr 1 Kentucky Derby and going on to change breeding for the better across the world.
Last night, Mighty Heart sat off the speed and easily won the Prince Of Wales at Ontario’s Fort Erie racetrack. That’s the 2nd leg of Canada’s Triple crown.
He returns to Woodbine, this time on the grass for the third leg.
But the amazing thing about him is that he has just one eye.
It doesn’t seem to bother him but shows quite clearly that horses with one eye and or who are blind in one eye, can still be very, very effective racehorses.
Australian rules of racing, which by and large are the best I the world, prohibit one-eyes horses or horse who are blind in one eye, from racing here.
Might be time to change all that.
