When the dust settles on the Gr 1 CF Orr Stakes over 1400m this Saturday, former Irish star SIR DRAGONET (Camelot-Sparrow) will be talked about as the best horse in the land.
And this just after three starts in…this land.
But, before we go further, the horse’s name is Sir Dragon net….not Sir Dragonay as has been used thus far.
When he won the $5.2million Cox Plate at his first race in Australia, we saw his star quality.
Then he came from 16th at the bend to run 6th in the $7.7million Melbourne Cup and racing fans saw a young horse set to flourish under Aussie conditions.
Which it seems he has done.
He has developed power and his recent 1200m barrier trial was that of a bona fide superstar.
Ciaron Maher and David Eustice will saddle him this Saturday for his first ever sprint race and he will jump from gate 3.
When in Europe the shortest race even raced in was over 2000m and he was beaten that day at Gr 3 level at The Curragh.
But, the Aussie training methods have proven advantageous for him and he could smash the track record in winning on Saturday.
“I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I’ve been waiting 10 years or so for a horse like this.
“
He takes your breath away,” said his rider Glen Boss.
Incidentally, a major advertising campaign conducted by Racing Victoria will feature 800 billboards sent all over Australia highlighting the big All-Star Mile.
And Sir Dragonet is the horse on the billboard.
So it’s worth getting his name pronounced correctly.
