A nine race program has been set down for Ascot this Saturday where it is 1000 Guineas Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.
Ascot 1000 Guineas 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Ascot 1000 Guineas
Race 1. (15:12) GLENROY CHAFF MAIDEN 1600m
Rising back up in trip should suit 5 Trisuem (Bet Now: $4.40). Was 1600m back to 1500m when racing here several weeks ago. Got back in the run and closed off okay late in the piece without really threatening behind King Cruzer in a maiden which has produced a couple of winners, so the form reads okay and back up in trip, she appeals.
4 Molly Magee (Bet Now: $6.00) is nearing a maiden win for Gary Crispin. She ran over 1500m here two weeks back when near the speed throughout and battled away pretty well in defeat when second to Belafonte Boy in a good effort. That run should toughen her up for this 1600m assignment.
3 Regal Sun (Bet Now: $13.00) has less convictions than most and will press forward, so has to be considered a leading chance despite his two career outings being somewhat plain, the latest being a 1400m maiden here last Saturday behind Drama Free. He’ll give a sight from the front.
Race 2. (15:52) VALE JOHN MARTINO HANDICAP 1800m
Best on the program for me in the shape of 2 Phoneme (Bet Now: $2.70) for the Gangemi team. He has done a really god job since joining the stable. Ran over the mile here two weeks ago and closed off with real purpose late in the piece behind impressive winner Living The Dream. Up to 1800m and the depth here, as a whole, is thin. Keen.
4 That’s Funny Az (Bet Now: $2.70) is the interesting runner. Surprised most with his win at Pinjarra three weeks ago. Led at a solid tempo and was there to be run down, but he found plenty and on the line was safely holding his rivals at bay. Off that, 1800m here should be fine and will look the winner for a fair portion of the race.
1 Juicing Carrots (Bet Now: $18.00) should appreciate a rise back up in trip. Three weeks between runs since racing over the mile here when back in the run and closing off okay without threatening behind Harry Thomas. Much better suited at 1800m and does have the runs on the board compared to most.
Race 3. (16:32) Graduation Handicap (1MW) 1800m
2000m back to 1800m I find interesting with 3 Queen Takes King (Bet Now: $2.80), but she has more upside than most and should prove hard to beat here in what looks a winnable race. Really caught the eye first up over the mile here before having five weeks off and stepping up to 2000m at Bunbury last Wednesday when beaten a lip by Designer Prince. Has more upside than most. Just hope back in trip isn’t an issue.
2 Porphyrio (Bet Now: $3.80) should appreciate a rise in trip for Brett Pope. Drifted in betting when racing over the mile at Bunbury last time out when back off the speed and worked home strongly late, finishing best to get the job done. Has got upside to come and the rise to 1800m should be no issue.
4 State Prosecutor (Bet Now: $71.00) is a knockout hope. Did perform well in town when Bob Peters had him. Now does his racing at Geraldton and his last couple haven’t been too bad behind another Bob Peters cast off, Strong Heart. Not sure he can win this, but can include him in wider multiples.
Race 4. (17:08) RTG 66+ Handicap 1600m
It’s hard to ignore what Roy Rogers has done with 2 Fangio (Bet Now: $2.90). This mare is absolutely flying at the moment, winning four on end over the mile at Albany and each time she has been dominant, the latest being in the Ladies Bracelet. She’s too good for that class of horse. Keen to see how she goes in town.
5 Giant Leap (Bet Now: $6.00) deserves another chance. Was three weeks between runs when racing at Pinjarra three weeks back. He was back in the run and got to the outside to present, but he didn’t find much in the straight and was pretty plain I thought. He’s better than that and can bounce back.
I’m very wary of 3 Power Of St George (Bet Now: $21.00) with the significant jockey upgrade with Paul Harvey taking over. This gelding ran last Saturday at this track/distance and didn’t really fire a shot after getting back off the speed. His best is good enough, so don’t leave him out of multiples.
Race 5. (17:45) LEX PIPER STAKES 1600m
5 Flash Ducati (Bet Now: $27.00) looks a real WA Derby prospect for Michael Lane. He lacks the class of some of these currently but fast forward a couple of months and I think he’ll be the best of this lot. It was an outstanding maiden win at Bunbury last time, really attacking the line with purpose to win and win well. 1675m back to the mile is the query, but he’ll be very strong at the end.
3 Western Empire (Bet Now: $1.75) comes through the Challenge Stakes from two weeks ago. He had a suck run behind the speed and was a tad keen in the run, which meant he was left flat footed when the sprint went on but picked up and was sound in defeat. Reckon away from the fence with clear air will ensure he can relax better in the run.
6 Brave Battle (Bet Now: $21.00) is the interesting runner back in trip. Narrow defeat at this trip two back before stepping up to 2200m at Bunbury where I thought he was a bit plain after seemingly getting every chance under Pike. Heading towards the Derby, so keen to see how he goes up in grade/back in distance.
Race 6. (18:20) Graduation Handicap (1MW) 1800m
Going from 1200m up to 1800m is very interesting with 8 Reliable Star (Bet Now: $12.00), but a win here will ensure her rating is high enough to get a run in the WA Oaks so I’ll take a chance with her. Good late on debut over 1300m at Pinjarra. Freshened up and came back to 1200m at Bunbury and worked home well late in the piece. Has a stack of upside and in the right camp.
5 Eurasia (Bet Now: $5.00) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates, but he is an honest animal that is rarely far away. That was the case two weeks ago at this track/distance when on speed and putting the pressure on. Was there to win until the final 100m when tiring late. More economical run, hard to beat.
10 Wild Galah (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Chris Stelmach trained gelding that is hard fit and racing well at the moment. Last couple of runs have come at 2000m, somewhat disappointing two back before going much better behind Designer Prince. Hard fit, so 1800m here should be okay and does no work from the draw.
Race 7. (18:55) ASCOT 1000 GUINEAS 1800m
Bob Peters, as to be expected, has a very strong hand in this race. Finding the winner is the tricky part but I am leaning towards 7 Real Passion (Bet Now: $18.00). I would assume Chris Parnham would have had first pick so respecting the fact he has chosen Spirtely Star but I thought the last start win of Real Passion was impressive over the mile here over two weeks ago, sitting back off the speed and finishing best. She’ll eat up the 1800m and is hard to beat.
8 Spirtely Star (Bet Now: $8.00) is a progressive filly for Team Williams that Chris Parnham does ride and as stated above, I dare say he would have had first pick so respecting the fact he has chosen this girl. Sat on speed in the Real Passion race mentioned above and tried hard. Just couldn’t quite finish it off. Interesting to see what eventuates from a tricky gate, whether they press forward or drag back.
Fitter and up in trip I like for 4 Brave Angel (Bet Now: $16.00). Resumed two weeks ago in the Challenge Stakes when back, wide with cover, and was building the revs nicely. Just think her condition gave out late in the piece. She’ll take good improvement from that and up in trip, she appeals.
Race 8. (19:35) Graduation Handicap (1MW) 1400m
If 7 Beret (Bet Now: $6.00) is within range on the turn, I think he will prove too good for this lot. Ran three weeks ago at Pinjarra and just got a mile back in the run, but loved the way he found the line late in the piece behind That’s Funny Az. Just got a mile out of his ground that day. Just hope he can get a decent three wide drag up and launch.
11 Amelia’s Contraire (Bet Now: $7.50) is starting to become a bit costly but her best is clearly good enough to take this out. Ran over 1200m here two weeks ago and worked home okay from the back but was never a winning threat behind Lipstick Flickers. A lead is that Harvey sticks and perhaps is indeed looking for 1400m.
8 Baby Blues (Bet Now: $41.00) is an interesting runner. David Harrison trained mare that hasn’t done a great deal in three runs back from a spell but at the same time, the races she has contested have been far stronger than what she faces here. Think this is a race where you’ll get a proper guide as to where she is at because her best is clearly good enough.
Race 9. (20:12) RTG 72+ Handicap 1000m
Giving 7 Platinum Bullet (Bet Now: $4.60) another chance. Simon Miller trained mare that ran over this track/distance two weeks ago when back near last in the run and given the race shape, she had no chance, but closed off strongly at the end and producing some of the better late splits of the meeting. Can sit closer in the run and prove hard to beat late.
9 Time To Sizzle (Bet Now: $6.50) will look the winner for a long way but the last bit will be the test. That was the case a fortnight ago here. Showed brilliant early toe to lead the field up and was the winner for everywhere bar the final few strides when really getting the staggers. She’ll give you a great sight.
Down in the weights and from the soft draw, 12 Klondike Kenny (Bet Now: $46.00) can be dangerous at odds. Ran down the straight at Pinjarra last time when showing good toe to lead up near the outside fence and despite being challenged, she found plenty and was too good. Harder here, but down in the weights and has early toe.
