The Ascot Autumn Carnival continues this Saturday where it is WA Derby Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
WATC Derby 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the WATC Derby
Race 1. (14:04) Glenroy Chaff (bm72+) 1000m
4 Acromantula (Bet Now: $1.70) is a gun 1000m horse when he is able to lead and get control. He gets that set up here so happy to be in his corner. Four weeks between runs since a dominant all the way win over this track/distance, helped by a positive ride from Azzopardi. Holly Watson is the best front running rider in WA, and with her claim, this horse will take beating.
2 Express Time (Bet Now: $4.00) is an absolute beauty and back to 1000m is no issue. Ran over 1200m here three weeks ago and tried her guts out, as she always does, when second to surprise winner State Attorney. Like her back in trip and from the good draw, she commands respect.
3 Reflectivity (Bet Now: $9.50) is a veteran for Team Gangemi that resumes. He hasn’t raced since September 4 when down the track at Belmont in the Jolly Beggar behind Iseered Iseered. Been given a good break and he has looked to trial up really well in readiness for his return.
Race 2. (14:41) Pepsi Max (rs1mw) 1100m
I’ll take a chance with 2 Saffiano (Bet Now: $7.50), who resumes for the Gangemi team. Over 12 months between runs and is now with a new stable after formerly racing in NSW under the care of Annabel Neasham. Had a Spring prep with two trials for the Gangemis. Spelled and has had one trial this time in, leading throughout and he was trucking. Market will tell you if he’s ready to go.
5 Speed Dream (Bet Now: $4.20) looks to be in for a good prep. Resumed over 1200m here two weeks ago and worked to the line pretty well from off the speed when third to an in form Alien From Mars. Back to 1100m I find interesting because I do think 1400m suits. Will be strong late.
4 Dunbar (Bet Now: $6.00) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with Team Williams, he now finds himself with Peter Fernie and to me, this just screams out of a prep run to get him ready for something on the Good Friday meeting at Kalgoorlie. No public trials, but obviously watch the market.
Race 3. (15:21) Schweppes Tonic Plate 1100m
7 Here No Cash (Bet Now: $10.00) gets the nod in an okay juvenile race on paper. This son of Capitalist is on debut for Lindsey Smith, his latest trial seeing him lead throughout over 950m at Lark Hill and looked to go about his business quite nicely. Moved well and I think will take beating at start one.
1 Swear To God (Bet Now: $2.25) is a talented animal. Market wanted him when debuting here two weeks ago and under a peach steer from Parnhyam, he was miles too good for them in an impressive opening to his career. Had trialled well leading in so don’t think it was a one off and he commands respect.
5 Turkish Lad (Bet Now: $201.00) is a Galah gelding that resumes. He had a two run prep in the Summer to start his career, running third on debut before a down the track effort behind Revitup. Has had one 1000m trial to get ready for his return and should improve from prep one to prep two.
Race 4. (16:01) Tabtouch-wspeed Platinum-rs0ly 1200m
Couple of key scratchings has made me switch around here and go with 6 Premium Choice (Bet Now: $1.50). Final field, it looked a tricky map for him but with two scratchings, he maps pretty good to my eye, and really, it wasn’t hard to miss his run two weeks ago. Normal luck and I think he wins.
9 Star Present (Bet Now: $6.50) looks the map horse. Brock Lewthwaite trained mare that ran over this track/distance last week when on speed throughout and battled on gamely when third to Featherweight, a horse who I think wins the next race, so the form should be solid and she maps super from the gate.
Best version of 4 Point Taken (Bet Now: $14.00) is certainly capable. Jim Taylor trained mare that resumed over 1200m here where she paraded like she would need the run and that’s how it panned out behind Alien From Mars. Much better suited at 1400m so maybe one more, but has class compared to some of these.
Race 5. (16:39) Cool Ridge (bm62+) 1200m
1 Featherweight (Bet Now: $4.80) is the pony to beat. Ran last week at this track/distance where he looked a good thing on paper and he duly saluted, bolting up in an impressive display. Returns to his own age and should get run of the race from the draw. He’ll take beating against this lot.
2 Harmika (Bet Now: $1.60) is on the seven day back up for Adam Durrant after racing over 1100m here last Saturday where she surged hard from off the speed, just missing out on the win when a narrow second to Metallon, a very much in form galloper, so I think that reads well for this and back up in trip is a big tick.
9 Above The Peg (Bet Now: $21.00) is a son of Blackfriars that resumes for Simon Miller. He hasn’t raced since November 17 at Belmont when down the track behind a handy horse in Memorable Miss. Thought he moved well in a recent Belmont trial. Just depends where he gets to from a tricky draw.
Race 6. (17:15) Crown Perth (bm78+) 1400m
5 Comes A Time (Bet Now: $2.70) is becoming quite a reliable horse and with a kind map, as well as hard fitness, leaning his way. Loved the way he produced change up speed from on the pace to win here last Saturday in a dominant display. Another win here and I dare say he’ll be tipped out with an eye towards the Railway.
7 God Has Chosen (Bet Now: $2.25) is a very promising horse for Lindsey Smith that resumes. Hasn’t raced since December 11 here when a dominant winner and stamped himself as a horse who could be a Carnival contender later this year. The trials have been quite sluggish, but he might just be a race day horse.
1 Floyd (Bet Now: $26.00) is having his first look at 1400m for some time but it might be worth a look given his recent efforts over the sprint trips have been a tad on the plain side, his latest run being two weeks back behind quality filly Buzzoom. Doubt he wins, but one for exotics.
Race 7. (17:55) Amelia Park Hcp 2400m
3 Chuck A Luck (Bet Now: $4.20) has found winning form…can he hold it? Had been knocking on the door to win for some time and it finally came here at the midweeks, bolting up over 2200m with sustained speed from the front in a dominant display. Off that, he’s in the mix here.
2 Tena Koutou (Bet Now: $3.50) appeals. Adam Durrant trained stayer that ran over 2100m here four weeks ago and tried his guts out from off the speed. Just found one better near the peg in the shape of Sowar. He does seem to enjoy having his races spaced and is racing like 2400m will be no issue.
6 Without Reason (Bet Now: $19.00) seems a real one batter so the 2400m should be fine for him. He ran in the Chuck A Luck race mentioned above where he was a bit flat I thought in trying to make a sustained run. He was okay, but nothing special. I do think 2400m suits and he seems best when ridden stone cold.
Race 8. (18:35) WATC Derby 2400m
3 Alaskan God (Bet Now: $2.30) looks the pony to beat. He was there to be run down in the Melvista but he was strong late and on the line was safely holding Trix Of The Trade in a dominant win. Off that, the 2400m should be fine, he maps super, flying…he’s the one they have to beat.
1 Trix Of The Trade… (Bet Now: $2.10) well what happened in the Melvista? He barely ran out a strong mile, he didn’t run 1800m two back. The Melvista seemed a bit odd as to why he was heading there, but he actually ran a beauty from the back when second to Alaskan God. Off that, I think he has to be respected.
2 Hear Me Sing (Bet Now: $21.00) looks a real one batter so the 2400m should be no issue for him. He comes through the Melvista where he was one of the first off the bit but kept on at the same speed and was gallant when fourth to Alaskan God. Doubt he turns the tables, but a must for exotics.
Race 9. (19:15) Furphy (bm66+) 1600m
3 Tiff Has Spoken (Bet Now: $8.50) doesn’t have the best of racing patterns but he’ll take beating if he’s within range. Just got a bit too far back last Saturday but was solid late behind General Grant. Proven Saturday performer who can produce a strong finale. Just don’t want him too back.
10 Trade War (Bet Now: $2.45) looks one of the hardest to beat for Michael Lane. He’s been racing really well in recent times but just can’t quite crack it for a win, his latest run being three weeks back over 1400m here when a closing second. Racing like the mile suits and finds a winnable race.
2 Lordhelpmerun (Bet Now: $11.00) hasn’t been too bad in a couple of runs for Michael Grantham and I think can be dangerous here. Just looked in need of the run fresh behind Al Magico. He then went to Pinjarra when just off the speed and battled away pretty well when third. Proven metro performer, albeit from a while ago, but overall, this isn’t a strong race.
