VRC St Leger 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the VRC St Leger
Race 1. (13:00) The Les Carlyon (Bm70) 1100m
10 Favanna (Bet Now: $8.00) will do me in a tricky race to open the card. This girl has home track advantage and comes here off the back of a maiden win at Cranbourne where she got into a lovely spot on speed and was trucking before being clicked up and away she went for a strong win. Likely maps to stalk the speed and she will be strong at the end.
9 Sea Mist (Bet Now: $11.00) commands some level of respect. Clinton McDonald trained filly that resumed in a maiden on Terang Cup Day where the market said she was a moral and she duly saluted, giving nothing else a look in and won quite comfortably. Comes straight to town but clearly has talent and is good enough to take this out.
2 Hearcomesthestar (Bet Now: $3.70) has been hit and miss throughout her career but she has found winning form. That came at Pakenham where she gave them a start and a beating, launching late to finish best in a strong effort. Likely spots them a start but should be strong at the end.
Race 2. (13:35) Flt Lt Peter Armytage (Bm78) 1100m
7 Niance (Bet Now: $1.60) is short enough, but understandably so. She has a bit on these and could easily measure up to blacktype grade before too long. 2/2 in Australia this former Kiwi, creating an impression first up at Pakenham but then at Sandown she was even more dynamic the way she put them away with ease. Destined for better races, keen on her prospects.
1 Little Miss Kubi (Bet Now: $9.00) is the only threat, if any. This mare resumed down the straight here when on speed, ridden with intent, and while held late, I thought she ran a very credible race in defeat behind Midtown Boss. If the fav is off her game, this girl is here to pick up the pieces.
8 Miss Mucinni (Bet Now: $20.00) is a Gavin Bedggood trained mare that is racing in solid form. Strong win at Oakbank two back before racing a few weeks back at Morphettville where she got a bit too far back. That said, she had her chance to run down In Her Stride but was still solid in defeat. Think with a more positive ride, she’ll be around the mark.
Race 3. (14:10) William Newton Vc (Bm84) 2500m
3 Double Cherry (Bet Now: $3.70) had looked like a camel since arriving from overseas but his last couple of runs have been more than encouraging. Tough winner at Wyong two back before going to the Chairmans at Randwick where he had front end control and tried his guts out but found one better in subsequent Sydney Cup winner Circle Of Fire, so that form is clearly A1 for this and he gets B Shinn.
5 Garachico (Bet Now: $5.00) is hard fit and racing well. He attempted to lead throughout at Morphettville just under two weeks ago where he gave a very strong kick under Stackhouse but couldn’t quite see it through when nabbed late by Perle Bleue. He has that hard 2500m run under the belt, which holds him in good stead here.
4 Team Captain (Bet Now: $26.00) will love this if it was a truly run 2500m given he is a 3000m+ horse. He ran over 3000m at Sandown last time out where he seemingly had every chance in defeat but he was still solid enough behind the in form Farag in a sit/sprint. More testing race here, hopefully, and he can threaten.
Race 4. (14:45) Colonel Sybil Irving Mbe (Bm70) 1400m
10 Poifect (Bet Now: $6.00) for me. Team Hayes trained filly that resumed at Sandown on Easter Monday where she got into a decent spot near the speed and presented to win under Zahra but being first up, condition just gave way late in the piece behind Paradise City. Better for the run and drawn out, hopefully can get decent cover and be strong at the end.
5 Intrepid Eagle (Bet Now: $7.00) is humming for Team McEvoy and knocking on the door. He should have won at Bendigo last time, but got badly held up at the wrong time before eventually getting clear and was very good late behind Brazen Lady. If the breaks go his way here, he can win.
6 El Rocko (Bet Now: $23.00) is a leading contender. This guy is a few weeks between runs since racing over the mile at Pakenham where he got a fair way out of his ground but found the line with purpose late in the piece in a really good effort behind Rampant Lion. Dangerous for mine if he can settle closer.
Race 5. (15:20) Anzac Day Stakes 1400m
2 Feroce (Bet Now: $4.40) has done little wrong in two career outings for Dom Sutton and appeals. He was a sharp debut winner at Pakenham before proving that was no fluke with a win at Caulfield a few weeks back, sitting on speed and finding plenty under pressure to fend them off and win. Keen to see how he goes against this lot.
5 Hoax (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the better juveniles in Tassie so keen to see how she goes in Melbourne for Barry Campbell. She is 2/2 to start her career and each time she has been quite dominant, the latest being a couple of weeks ago over 1100m at Hobart, leading throughout and giving nothing else a look in. Good test here, but confident she measures up.
9 Shaalute (Bet Now: $71.00) is a juvenile I have had time for since the debut. He was knocking on the door to win his maiden and it came at Geelong, where he knuckled down strongly and finished best to win and win well. He is a big price and I think ridden with a sit, he can be more dynamic late.
Race 6. (15:55) Vrc St Leger 2800m
11 Ahuriri (Bet Now: $3.50) is a great bet I feel. Chris Waller trained galloper that comes through the Adrian Knox at Randwick where she got too far back in the run and wasn’t 100% happy on the shifty ground but once picked up, she was quite good late in the piece behind Good Banter. Thought she’d head to the SA Oaks but she does seem one paced so 2800m here, she appeals.
12 Alma Rise (Bet Now: $3.30) is short enough but she does look a filly of some promise. Maiden win last time was at 2000m at Pakenham where she made an absolute mess of them and the arrogance of the win was something else under J Kah, who sticks with her. Tricky draw, but will press forward and has enormous upside.
5 Impunity (Bet Now: $27.00) looks a one batter so rising to 2800m should be okay. John Thompson trained gelding that was a strong maiden winner over 1850m at Newcastle, getting better as the race went on and was quite dominant in the run to the line. Maps to do no work and gets M Zahra. Ticks a few boxes.
Race 7. (16:30) Wgcdr Ian Bayles Dfc (Bm70) 1600m
9 Amleto (Bet Now: $3.60) has a bit on these I feel. UK import for Ciaron Maher that made his Australian debut over 1500m on Good Friday at Yarra Valley. He got badly held up when wanting to run before eventually getting clear and was very good late behind Fire Of Etna. Bigger track, fitter, Zahra sticks, strong late…good luck beating him.
12 Splash Back (Bet Now: $9.50) is an Andrew Bobbin trained mare that has an engine under the hood. She resumed a few weeks ago over 1400m where she gave them a start and a beating, getting held up at times before eventually getting clear and she dashed late to win and win well. She’s heading in the right direction and can take this out without surprising.
15 Our Empress Zoe (Bet Now: $9.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. Price/Kent trained mare that ran behind Legacies a few weeks back where she seemingly got into a dream spot behind the speed and presented to win but couldn’t quite finish it off, perhaps just lacking the hard race fitness. She has that fitness under the belt now and is a previous third up winner.
Race 8. (17:05) Auckland Thoroughbred Racing Trophy (78) 1100m
12 Elouyou (Bet Now: $4.50) for me in the get out. Talented animal for Scott Cameron that resumes after a very good Summer prep, where he won two on the bounce at Geelong and each time he looked sharp. He looked to jog in a recent jumpout at Werribee and Lane sticks with him from last prep, riding him in the jumpout and riding here fresh.
11 Zion (Bet Now: $16.00) is dangerous with his best. He resumed over 1000m at Cranbourne where he got back to near last in the run and spotted those in front a tidy start but he was very good late in the piece without threatening behind Manhattan Thunder. Has run well down the straight previously so he commands respect.
6 Master Montaro (Bet Now: $13.00) is hit and miss at times but his best is dangerous. He ran at Sandown last time where he did too much work to land on speed and just felt the pinch late in the piece behind stablemate Marble Arch. Tricky gate, but will press forward and this isn’t an overly deep race. Knockout hope.
