A star won the Champions Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday but it wasn’t Anamoe, as most had anticipated, with Zaaki leading all the way and repeating the does from 12 months ago.

2022 Champions Stakes Race Horse Ratings
1.Zaaki: He got dry ground, he got a soft lead, he was able to find the fence…and that was the race over, from a long way out.
Rating: 9.5/10
2.Mo’Unga: Came out three wide before the turn to get momentum and build the revs. He was as brave as ever, keeping on finding the line for third. It probably proves the theory that in the Autumn, the 2400m of the Tancred would be perfect.
Rating: 8.5/10
3.Hezahocka: He has run an absolute blinder. Unlucky in what was a thin sort of race last Saturday but he has run out of his skin to finish second.
Rating: 8.5/10
4.Anamoe: You’d have to mark him down as really disappointing. Presented to win the race 400m but he didn’t ping when he needed to and was comfortably held late. End of prep run I’d suggest.
Rating: 4/10
5.I’m Thunderstruck: He was solid from the back. Got widest on the turn and was within range of Anamoe but if he wasn’t going to get past them then this guy was no chance and he battled on the line.
Rating: 4/10
6.Banker’s Choice: Racing so well but just can’t crack it for a win. Back in a race where the leader controlled, he was never a winning factor but didn’t mind the way he found the line. Get him in the Doncaster in the Autumn.
Rating: 4/10
7.Elliptical: Had the 1/1 sit and presented to be dangerous but when asked for the big effort, he paddled and couldn’t go with them. End of prep run for him as well I think.
Rating: 3/10
8.Hinged: Strange placement by connections and she ran accordingly. Never really got into the contest and was plain when asked for the effort. Perhaps didn’t handle the seven day back up.
Rarting: 2/10
9.Mr Maestro: Thrown in the deep end and just didn’t measure up. Got back, tracked up but didn’t have the change up speed to go with them in the straight.
Rating: 2/10
10.Mustang Valley: Back near last in the run and pretty much stayed there. Good on them for trying, but she’s not up to this level. Go back home to NZ and she can win some Group l races.
Rating: 2/10
11.Maximal: Sat outside Zaaki but was the first horse beat. I just don’t think he’s that much good. Enough of a sample size now to suggest that he’s not up to this level.
Rating: 0/10
