2022 Cox Plate Stakes Replay

2022 Cox Plate Stakes Race Horse Ratings

1. Anamoe: He’s a champion. J Mac lobbed him into the perfect spot just behind the speed and really, the race was over 600m out. He waited and waited to push the button and once he did, away he went and he was much too good. Group l winner at 2/3/4 years of age, he’s a champion.

Rating: 10/10

2. I’m Thunderstruck: He’s made a mug of me. I thought he was a risk at 2000m but he ran so well in the Might And Power and was even better here. Back last in a sit/sprint, he did a mighty job to get as close as he did. Can easily make a case to say he was the run of the race.

Rating: 9.5/10

3. El Bodegon: He was one badly disadvantaged by the race shape. He wanted the tempo to be more genuine but just didn’t have the sprint when asked. He picked up and was excellent to the line and through it. He might have lost the battle, but long term, he may win the war.

Rating: 8.5/10

4. Zaaki: Unfortunately the rail was off for him. He needs the rail to guide him and Jamie Kah did the right thing by angling off it down the side, looking for better ground. But he rolled back towards there and that sealed his fate. Still stuck on bravely for fourth.

Rating: 8/10

5. Alligator Blood: Did a bit of work to land outside Zaaki but from there, he got a very cheap run. Beaten comfortably, but far from disgraced in defeat.

Rating: 7/10

6. Mo’Unga: Huge in defeat given the race shape and track conditions. Got back to near last in the run and was excellent late out wide. He’s right on track for Stakes Day.

Rating: 7.5/10

7. Mr Brightside: Was forced back from the wide gate, which pretty much sealed his fate. Tried to make a sustained run but the effort just told late. Draws a gate, he finishes closer.

Rating: 6.5/10

8. Laws Of Indices: He got into a decent spot early and was on the back of some key rivals. But, 2000m at this level, and on wet ground, he struggled and just couldn’t quite finish it off.

Rarting: 5/10

9. Gold Trip: Just a run. Spencer tried to angle wide on the turn but there was no gaps emerging so he cut back inside and made up some headway, but was never threatening.

Rating: 4/10

10. Young Werther: Was openly said that this run was essentially a Melbourne Cup clean out and he ran like that. Just a run, nothing flash.

Rating: 3/10

11. Maximal: He was trucking in the run and was trying to barge into clear air on the turn. But, as soon as you had that thought, the wheels were spinning on the wet ground. Forget he went around.

Rating: 3/10

12. Profondo: Just retire him already.

Rating: 0/10
