A crack field has been assembled for the Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington this Saturday, with quality at the top with boom and the new brigade down the bottom.

The four main speed influences are Nature Strip, Eduardo, Home Affairs and Profiteer. It’ll be interesting to see which side they go to, whether it’s the rail or the grandstand side. Nature Strip and Eduardo likely sit 1-2, with Home Affairs and Profiteer not far away.
2022 Black Caviar Lightning Runner Preview
1. Nature Strip: High quality animal that resumes. Came of age in the Spring, winning the Toorak and Golden Eagle. His recent jumpout was strong but he will need luck from the wide gate. If he does get a drag into the race, he’ll take beating.
2. Eduardo: He had a super Spring prep without winning. He can be a thinker, but his recent trial was encouraging and from gate one, I’d love to see him use that to advantage. If so, a win wouldn’t entirely shock even though he gets better as the prep goes on.
3. Masked Crusader: This is the contender or pretender prep for me when it comes to him. Went within a lip of winning The Everest, but the race was set up for him. And he is still learning his craft whereas the first two are the top dogs. 1000m is short of his best but be will be strong late.
4. Gytrash: I am really surprised there are some experts who think his price of $14 is overs and he even should be a $5-$6 chance. I actually think $14 is a touch of unders. Off recent evidence, that being his recent runs and a jumpout/trial, he’s not the horse he was 18-24 months ago. His saving grace is a kind map and a liking for the straight track. But the jumpout/trial was plain, even for him, who isn’t a great trialler at his best.
5. The Inferno: Talented sprinter when right and was far from disgraced in a hot Everest behind Nature Strip. I do think though this will be a good kick off point with eyes towards the Newmarket.
6. The Astrologist: Straight track specialist who is well and truly being thrown in the deep end here. He is an honest animal. Just not up to this level.
7. Swats That: Has a liking for the straight course and has looked good in prep work for this resumption. Personally, I think she would be more effective against her own sex. A race like the Goodwood would be perfect.
8. Home Affairs: Is he the new kid on the block that announces himself here? A win in this race and his value would comfortably would go towards $30 Million. Stunning win in the Coolmore and with J Mac riding, he’s going to take beating.
9. Profiteer: If he’s going to win a big race, this is it. He is a 1000m horse and is proven down the straight. From event prep work, they are trying to teach him to take a sit. I think that’s smart, for this race anyway, because if he tries to eyeball Nature Strip and co, he’ll run last. With a sit, a first four threat.

Nine runners and the horse I feel is a bet here at the odds is Eduardo. 1000m specialist and at the trip, does have the wood on Nature Strip. He is prepped to run a beauty here so I’ll be having $25 Win/$75 Place at $4.2/$1.6.
