A funeral of an 80yo Nyngan lady ‘Shirley Trothe’ sparked a plunge on a $201 shot in Saturday’s Stradbroke Handicap.
More than 400 mourners met at the Nyngan RSL after the funeral to honour the memory of ‘Shirley Trothe’ a lady who loved a bet on the horses.
One of Shirley’s favourite horses was The Virginian which just happened to be racing on the day as a $201 shot to win the Stradbroke.
Shirley’s son Peter mentioned at the wake that The Virginian was racing on the day and said to have an each way bet on it for his mum.
“It was emotional, everyone was jumping up and down and they all come over and said “Shirl got that one home for you mate” and I knew she did – it was for mum,” Peter told Daily Mail Australia.
The TAB ran out of money and had to borrow cash from the RSL after The Virginian ran 3rd in the race paying a massive $51/1 for the place.
