A small but solid field has been set for the time honoured Hanging Rock Cup (1800m) on Australia Day.

2025 Hanging Rock Cup Runner Preview:

1. Prince Leo: Former Kiwi that makes his Australian debut. His NZ form does read well but his two jumpouts suggest that he needs racing/more time. Potentially on a Mornington Cup path?

2. The Nephew: He was several weeks between runs when contesting the Burrumbeet Cup last time. He got back in the run and closed with purpose I thought behind Friday At Five. The draw is awful but if within range, he can win.

3. Corbulo: He has had a couple of runs for Gemma Reilly and should be at peak fitness. Total forgive at Sale last time when punching forward to lead and just felt the pinch late. If he leads and gets control, he’ll run a beauty.

4. Friday At Five: Back to defend her title after winning the race last year. She comes here off the back of a Burrumbeet Cup triumph where she made a mess of them after sitting near the speed. Maps to lead/stalk and get every chance.

5. Flying Basil: Drops miles in grade/depth after racing in the Woodford Cup at The Bool when held but far from disgraced in defeat behind Unseen Ruler. Back to this level, he’s a definite improver at odds.

6. Sound Of Cannons: He may want 2400m+ but I reckon he’s well over the odds. Just looked in need of the run fresh over this trip at Flemington. Tick over trial since was good, he maps to stalk the speed and he will be strong late.

7. Any Luck: She was very plain in the Camperdown Cup last Saturday and for mine she’ll struggle against these.

8. Bannerton: Country Cups veteran that has been kept on ice since placing on Dec 14 in the Moulamein Cup. He’ll be strong late…but he’s not up to these.

9. High Torque: Just fair fresh at Echuca. Not up to this class of race.

10. Jayzeal: Eligible for 58 races. Not a Country Cup.
