Incentivise is set to start the shortest-priced Melbourne Cup favourite since Phar Lap after tightening further in TAB’s market following this afternoon’s weight penalty announcement.
Racing Victoria’s Greg Carpenter issued the Caulfield Cup champion with a 1.5kg penalty, which takes his Melbourne Cup weight to 57kg.
TAB responded by readjusting his price to $2.30. He went up $2.80 after his Caulfield romp and was in to $2.50 on Monday morning, before the penalty announcement.
Only Phar Lap has started shorter than Incentivise’s price in the 2021 Melbourne Cup. He was 8/11 ($1.73) when he won in 1930, having finished third as an even money ($2) favourite in 1929.
