If the world hadn’t gone south earlier this year, we’d all be glued to our TV sets watching the Tokyo Olympics today.
Sadly, we aren’t but hopefully in a year’s time we can.
Now, saying all that, on this day back in 1988 at the Seoul Olympics, Australia experienced one of its grandest on track moments when an Aussie 400m hurdler name Debbie Flintoff-King staged a whirlwind finish to win in the last bound.
She was 4th coming off the home bend, then just found everything inside her soul to win the gold…in Seoul by 1/100th of a second.
Today, on the 32 year anniversary of that historic and courageous win, a horse bearing her name, FLINTOFFKING (Olympic Glory-Let’s Make Adeal) runs at Warrnambool.
And I’m on for a stack.
She, like her namesake, sits back and charges late and today, historically, seasonally and appropriately, she will do the same in the first race of the afternoon.
Last start she ran an eye-catching 4th at this track over 2000m coming from 9th in the early stages.
It would be a fitting and timely tribute to one of Australia’s greatest female Olympians….and look who this mare is by.
Seems so appropriate on EVERY level that she wins today.
