A strong field has been assembled for the Perth Cup Cup (2400m) on Wednesday, with a pretty solid bunch of stayers assembled.
Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2025 Perth Cup.

2025 Perth Cup Runner Preview:
1. Casino Seventeen: I think he is cast. Yes, close up in the Ted Van Heemst, but he looked to have every chance off the stop/start tempo and just whacked to the line. If he wins, too good, but happy to risk.
2. Young Werther: Young Werther is the fascinating runner. Barrier trial at Caulfield Heath last time but his late splits were pretty good for a stayer. He is the best horse in the race, by some distance. The question is, is there petrol left in the tank? Or are they squeezing the lemon due to the prizemoney carrot dangle? If he brings his best, I dare say he wins, but personally, I’d rather watch than back him to do it.
3. Let’s Galahvant: He should have won the Ted Van Heemst, and comfortably. Badly held up behind slow runners late in the race before eventually getting out and flashing late. But, the big, big knock for him is the Bar Plate are on. A horse with Bar Plates = pen job.
4. Socks Nation: Gee I thought she was plain in the Ted Van Heemst. To me, it looked an end of prep run, and if any other stable than C Maher, it’s a line through the horse, but this stable and what they can do with their runners…she goes in multiples.
5. Serpentine: The more I look at this race, the more I think Serpentine could be a good thing. You look at his form, it just reads far superior to anything engaged here. He’ll press forward from the wide gate and does look the likely leader, and he races best when leading and doing his own thing in front. If that does eventuate, he should be a $2.50 chance. Clear standout as far as I’m concerned.
6. Diamond Scene: The ATA winner and was given a peach by CJP to win. Handled the rise in weight well, albeit, beat nothing. That form looks very suspect. That said, he will have no issue with the trip and gets good weight relief.
7. Be Optimistic: Ambulance beats him home. Stunned he isn’t $101+.
8. Currimundi: He was back in the Ted Van Heemst and McGruddy tried to take off, inject some tempo into the race. He tried but couldn’t sustain the run. If there was rain, he would be a knockout chance. But for me, he goes through to the keeper.
9. Demolish: Thought he had every chance in the ATA and just whacked to the line. He is a good, solid campaigner…but I can’t see him as a Perth Cup winner.
10. Flower In The Wind: Eligible for benchmark races so wait til she goes back to that level.
11. Hemlock Stone: Was well specked in the ATA and after getting a suck run in transit, he just whacked to the line and was plain. Not for me.
12. In Good Order: In Good Order was absolutely blessed in the Ted Van Heemst, aided by a peach run and a peach ride. Gets a big jockey upgrade for this and does look one of the better local prospects. But he is favourite, and at the price, I can’t entertain him as a bet. For exotics, yes, definitely, but I’d want double figures.
13. Iowa: The knockout for me is Iowa. Hasn’t got the class but he is a stayer, a proper stayer, who will just keep chipping away. That was seen in the ATA when first up and he battled on really well in defeat I thought behind Diamond Scene. He will press forward and will just keep batting away at the same speed. If this becomes survival of the fittest, then he comes right into play.
14. Playhouse Patron: He’ll land near the front but just lacks the class.
15. Sentimental Hero: Sentimental Hero is flying for Peter Fernie…just a matter of is it one too many to the well? He’s been up a long time but is seemingly holding his form very well and will love the weight relief from the ATA when an unlucky second to Diamond Scene. He has the on speed racing style, and I dare say may stalk Serpentine, so he’s dangerous.

There looks as though there will be good tempo with several go forward horses engaged. As to who will lead, I think Serpentine will force the issue from the wide gate and take it up. He should get the good cart over via the likes of Iowa, Playhouse Patron and Sentimental Hero. Demolish is drawn well and should hold a forward spot.
