Tabcorp has announced the appointment of Gillon McLachlan as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective from August 5, 2024. McLachlan’s appointment is pending the necessary regulatory approvals, during which time he will act as an observer, with Bruce Akhurst continuing as Executive Chairman.
McLachlan joins Tabcorp following a decade-long tenure as CEO of the Australian Football League (AFL), where he spearheaded significant transformations and growth. Under his leadership, AFL revenues more than doubled from $502 million in 2013 to $1,063 million in 2023, including the negotiation of the largest sports broadcasting rights deal in Australian history. He also oversaw the AFL’s expansion to 18 teams and the establishment of the AFL Women’s (AFLW) competition.
Akhurst praised McLachlan’s appointment, highlighting his proven track record and deep knowledge of wagering, sport, and racing. “Gill is recognized as one of Australia’s leading CEOs, and securing him is a significant vote of confidence for Tabcorp’s future,” Akhurst said. “He brings a growth mindset and the capability to capitalize on the opportunities ahead of us.”
McLachlan’s extensive experience includes managing complex stakeholder environments and working productively with government entities. His thoroughbred racing knowledge as an owner and breeder further enhances his suitability for the role.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, McLachlan stated, “Tabcorp is a wagering, broadcast, and integrity services business, and the challenge of growing it is appealing. It’s about creating entertainment for our customers in a safe way and providing a unique omni-channel entertainment offering across digital, retail, and media.”
McLachlan acknowledged Tabcorp’s significant contributions to the racing industry, noting that the company contributed $1.1 billion last year and remains one of the industry’s biggest partners. He emphasized the enormous opportunities ahead and his commitment to driving the sport category and accelerating Tabcorp’s transformation journey.
Akhurst highlighted Tabcorp’s readiness for the next phase of growth, stating, “In the two years since demerger, we have significantly improved our customer offering and delivered key structural reforms in Queensland and Victoria. The transformation of Tabcorp is not complete, and I am delighted that Gill is joining us to continue driving change and growth.”
McLachlan holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from Melbourne University, a Bachelor of Commerce from Adelaide University, and has completed the Senior Executive Program at Stanford University. Details of his employment arrangements are attached to this announcement.
