The Listed Carlyon Stakes is set to run this Saturday, August 25 at Moonee Valley Racecourse. The Carlyon Stakes has an interesting history in Australia, with the original incarnation of this race transforming into the Australian Stakes in 2010. The Carlyon Stakes now takes place in August, with the Group 1 William Reid Stakes, previously called the Australia Stakes, once again called the William Reid Stakes and running in March.
The Australian Stakes is a weight for age race held in January as the first major race for the Moonee Valley Autumn Racing Carnival. In 2010 the Carlyon Stakes was renamed the Australia Stakes, with a number of top quality horses winning throughout the years. Whitefriars won the Australian Stakes in 2011, with Black Caviar winning in 2010 and Lucky Secret winning in 2009.
The Carlyon Stakes has also had a lot of high profile winners throughout the years, with the first race taking place in 2001. This year’s event is shaping up to be an interesting field, including the likes of Atomic Force, Danehill Dancer, and African Pulse.
