The Caulfield Guineas Prelude is a Group 3 race for colts and geldings. Held over 1400 metres for three year old horses, the Caulfield Guineas Prelude is run under set weights plus penalty conditions. This event has been part of the horse racing circuit since 1985, originally as a Listed event until it changed to a Group 3 race in 2001.

The Caulfield Guineas Prelude is run on the same day as the Group 1 Rupert Clarke Stakes, and is an important lead up to the high profile Caulfield Guineas. The Thousand Guineas Prelude is the female equivalent of this event, and is held on the day of the Underwood Stakes.
Some of the past winners of the Caulfield Guineas Prelude have gone on to win the Caulfield Guineas, including Anacheeva in 2010 and Helmet in 2011. Some of the horses in this event may have come from other prominent races, such as the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill Racecourse in Sydney. The Caulfield Guineas Prelude can also be a good form guide for races to come, such as the Group 2 AAMI Vase and the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Among the notable horses to win the Caulfield Guineas Prelude over the years include Strategic in 1995, Elvstroem in 2003, Apache Cat in 2005, Purrealist in 2007, and Demerit in 2009. The 2011 edition of the Caufield Guineas Prelude was won by Helmet, with Secret Hills in second position and Specter in third.
