The Group 1 WS Cox Plate is one of the biggest and most prestigious races in Australia, attracting the very best talent each year to battle it out at Moonee Valley Racecourse. This race is run over 2040 metres and worth $3 million in prize money, a grand sum that has been won by some of the countries best horses. Past winners of the WS Cox Plate include household names like Phar Lap and Makybe Diva, with the full winners’ list including most of the big names of Australian racing.
The most notable winners of the WS Cox Plate include Phar Lap, Kingston Town, Rising Fast, Dulcify, Gunsynd, Super Impose, Octagonal, Might and Power, Sunline, Northerly, Makybe Diva, and So You Think. Some of these champions have managed to win the Cox Plate on more than one occasion, with other names winning this event in combination with either the Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup.
While it is hard to single out one winner, perhaps the biggest prize should go to Rising Fast after winning the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate in a single season in 1954. The Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup double has been won by six horses over the years – Makybe Diva, Might and Power, Saintly, Nightmarch, Phar Lap, and Rising Fast. Double winners of the Cox Plate include Phar Lap, Flight, Tobin Bronze, Sunline, Northerly and Fields Of Omagh, with the legendary Kingston Town managing to win on three occasions.
In recent years, winners of the Cox Plate include El Segundo in 2007, Maldivian in 2008, So You Think in 2009 and 2010, Pinker Pinker in 2011, and Ocean Park in 2012.
