The Flight Stakes is a Group 1 horse race held every year in Sydney at Randwick Racecourse. Raced over 1600 metres, this event is a big part of the Spring Racing Carnival and is held on the same day as the Epsom Handicap. Held under set weight conditions, the Flight Stakes is the only Group 1 race in Sydney that is exclusively for 3 year old filles.

The Flight Stakes has a long history in Australian racing, stretching back to 1947. The first ever race was won by Nizam’s Ring, with some recent winners including Streama in 2011, Secret Admirer in 2010, and More Joyous in 2009. The champion mare named Flight won the Cox Plate in 1945 and 1946, and the Flight Stakes was named after her.
Other well known fillies to have won this race include the Sunline, Assertive Lass, Triscay, and Bounding Away. Sunline managed to win the Furious Stakes/Tea Rose Stakes/Flight Stakes treble in 1998, followed by Danglissa in 1999, Unworldly in 2000, Samantha Miss in 2008, and Streama in 2011.
This race started it’s life as a Principal Race event, graduating to a Group 1 race in 1984. It was raced over a distance of 8 furlongs until 1972, when the advent of the metric system saw it change to a 1600 metre race. The 2011 edition of the Flight Stakes was won by Streama, who moved forward strongly in the straight to win from Hallowell Belle in second and Dowager Queen in third.
