The MacKinnon Stakes is a Group 1 horse race run under weight for age conditions. Hosted by Victoria Racing Club, this event takes place during the famous four day carnival that also includes the prestigious Melbourne Cup. The MacKinnon Stakes is run over a distance of 2000 metres, with $1 million in prize money up for grabs.

The MacKinnon Stakes has a long and rich history in Australian racing, with the first event held way back in 1869. Over the years, the MacKinnon Stakes has been won by lots of big name horses, including Carbine in 1890, Phar Lap in 1930-31, Peter Pan in 1934, Ajax in 1938, Leilani in 1974, Dulcify in 1979, Rogan Josh in 1999, and Lonhro in 2002.
This race is held in honour of LKS MacKinnon, who was a former chairman of the Victoria Racing Club. Held on Victoria Derby Day, the MacKinnon Stakes takes place on the same day as the Myer Classic and Coolmore Stud Stakes. The MacKinnon Stakes was originally called the Melbourne Stakes, graduating to a Group 1 event in 1979.
The Mackinnon Stakes/Melbourne Cup Double has been won 16 times in the long history of this event, with Rogan Josh doing it last in 1999. Other winners of the double include At Talaq in 1986, Empire Rose in 1988, and Let’s Elope in 1991. The 2011 event was won by Glass Harmonium, who raced to victory ahead of Mourayan in second position and Rekindled Interest in third.
