The McKenzie Stakes is a set weight race with penalties taking place this weekend, August the 25th, 2012. This 1200 metre race for three year old colts and geldings offers prize money of $120,000, and is part of the McKenzie Stakes Day at Moonee Valley. Also including the Carlyon Stakes on the same day, the McKenzie Stakes is Race 5. The McKenzie Stakes was won by Amah Rock in 2011, when Jockey Danny Nikolic rode the inexperienced three-year-old to victory at Moonee Valley. Second place was taken by Hot Spin, with third place being Secret Hills.

The colt Anacheeva took out the McKenzie Stakes in a very tight 3-way photo finish in 2010. Anacheeva, ridden by Luke Nolen and trained by Peter Moody, won by a head from fellow colt The Ruffian, with another colt Bullbars only a nose away in third place.
