The Sir Rupert Clark Stakes has been run since 1951, originally known as the Invitation Stakes between 1951 and 1974. At first this event was a Principal race run over 7 furlongs, becoming a 1400 metre event in 1972 and graduating to a Group 1 race in 1979. This event was named after former chairman of the Melbourne Racing Club, Sir Rupert Clarke, who was also the chairman of Cadbury Schwepps and P&O Australia.
The Sir Rupert Clark Stakes has attracted a number of famous horses over the years, including Mannerism in 1992, Poetic King in 1994, Testa Rossa in 1999 and 2000, Rewaaya in 2006, and Orange County in 2008. This race is run before events like the Group 1 Toorak Handicap, Caulfield Guineas, and Emirates Stakes, and can be a good form guide for these later races.
The 2011 edition of this race was won by Toorak Toff, who looked comfortable ahead of Pinnacles in second place and Master Of Design in third.
