The Thousand Guineas Prelude has been run since 1983, despite a few name changes along the way. This Group 3 event is hosted by the Melbourne Racing Club at Caulfield Racecourse, held under set weights and penalties conditions. Three year old fillies tackle this event in preparation for the massive Group 1 Caulfield Guineas which takes place on the same track one month later.

The Thousand Guineas Prelude takes place over 1400 metres and is the female equivalent of the Caulfield Guineas Prelude for colts & geldings which is held one week later. The Thousand Guineas Prelude is worth $175,000 in prize money and takes place on the same day as the high profile Group 1 Underwood Stakes.
A number of fine horses have won this event during its relatively short history, including Miss Finland who went on to win multiple group races during her career. The Thousand Guineas Prelude has been known by a few different names over the years, initially called the VATC Health Stakes. This event then changed to the VATC Tranquil Star Stakes in 1990, the MRC Jumeirah International Stakes in 2002, and finally became the MRC Thousand Guineas Prelude in 2007.
The 2011 edition of the Thousand Guineas Prelude was won by Bliss Street, in what was a controversial end to a great race. Initially decided as a dead heat with Celebrity Girl ahead of Hallowell Belle, fourth place Mosheen made a formal protest. When the protest was upheld, Bliss Street took the win ahead of Hallowell Belle in second and Mosheen in third position.
