The Underwood Stakes has been won by some of the most famous thoroughbreds in the country, many of whom have gone on to win some of the biggest races in Australia.
Because the Underwood Stakes is run over the uncommon distance of 1800 metres, it is used by some horses as a step between 1600 metre and longer events.
Some of the champions who have been victorious at this event include So You Think in 2010, Weekend Hussler in 2008, Elvstroem in 2004, Northerly in 2001-02, Octagonal in 1996, Rubiton in 1987, and Bonecrusher in 1986.
2012 winner Ocean Park went on to win both the Caulfield Cup and WS Cox Plate after winning this event. In 2011, second place horse Southern Speed also came second in the Caulfield Cup at her next start.
In 2010, So You Think went on to win two WS Cox Plate titles after winning the Underwood Stakes, with 2009 winner Heart Of Dreams going on to win the Caulfield Stakes.
