The excitement of the 157th edition of the Emirates Melbourne Cup will hit Sydney on the first Tuesday in November, as the harbour city’s newest waterfront precinct, Barangaroo, hosts a live site on Australia’s biggest raceday.
Sydneysiders can get caught up in all the exhilarating action of ‘the race that stops a nation’™ by coming together at a public live site for the first time.
The Victoria Racing Club (VRC), together with G.H.Mumm and Lendlease, will welcome more than 3,000 people to Barangaroo on Emirates Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7 November, 2017.
From 12.30pm to 9pm, the harbourfront location will come to life with everything that Australia’s premier racing event is famous for – food, fashion, entertainment and racing.
A big screen will show Channel Seven’s coverage of all the thrilling action on and off the track from Flemington, while Barangaroo’s many restaurants will be transformed with curated menus and in-venue events. The Wulugul Walk waterfront dining hub will also be home to additional pop-up eateries and bars offering a mix of tasty delights.
The place to be will be a ticketed VIP G.H.Mumm marquee, close to the big screen, entertainment and fashion activations.
Punters can soak up the racing atmosphere with betting facilities on site.
VRC Interim Chief Executive Neil Wilson said Barangaroo will be the number one destination for Emirates Melbourne Cup Day celebrations in Sydney.
“This live site will combine the excitement of world-class racing with the best of Sydney – delicious food and beverages, and stunning views across the harbour,” Mr Wilson said.
“While attending the Emirates Melbourne Cup is a bucket-list item for many Australians, we know not everyone can make it to Flemington for the biggest day on Australia’s sporting and social calendar. We invite Sydneysiders and visitors to the harbour city to immerse themselves in all the colour and excitement of Australia’s most celebrated major event at Barangaroo on Tuesday 7 November.
“We acknowledge the contribution of G.H.Mumm in being an instrumental driver in making the live site at Barangaroo the place to be on Cup Day in Sydney,” added Mr Wilson.
Bryan Fry, Pernod Ricard Australia Managing Director, said: “We are thrilled to be bringing the best of the Birdcage direct to Barangaroo. Our partnership with the VRC has made the Mumm marquee one of the hottest destinations at Flemington Racecourse, and we are excited to extend our collaboration to the doorstep of Sydneysiders. We look forward to kicking off the summer at the ultimate destination for Sydney’s Emirates Melbourne Cup celebrations.”
