This years edition of the ‘Stallion making’ Caulfield Guineas is set to be among the worst in recent years with most of the countries best three year old colts set to bypass the race.
The Caulfield Guineas was looked upon as arguably the countries best ‘stallion making’ race for colts but in recent years interest by the countries biggest studs looks to be drying up as they contest the likes of the Golden Rose and the Coolmore Stud Stakes instead.
Sydney’s three year olds have had the wood over Melbourne’s in recent years and this year looks no different which has also aided in the demise of the Guineas as a stud making race with the Sydney stables opting not to travel their horses south.
The Golden Rose had always been the Caulfield Guineas little sister but the increasing prize money in Sydney and the breeding market now focusing on speed has seen the Guineas lose its appeal among the big owners.
Last years dominant Caulfield Guineas winner The Autumn Sun could be an exemption although he did win the big three Guineas races inc the Randwick and Rosehill.
Saturday’s Golden Rose will rank as the best non sprint three year old race during the Spring which will take the mantle from next weekends G1 Caulfield Guineas, that is set be made up by maiden winners and fringe horses who will look to roll the dice that they might snag a G1 as we saw with Mighty Boss two years ago.
Money talks all languages and studs in past years were trying to wheel and deal weeks out of the Guineas to secure breeding rights for key horses heading into the race although the market is quiet suggesting the win on a horses CV is not worth that much to speculate.
Godolphin who no doubt own the most valuable colts in the country are set to go unrepresented in the race with Golden Rose winner Bivouac to bypass the race even though he would start as favourite if he was to do so, the operation is however now valuing The Everest and the Coolmore Stud Stakes as more valuable to win ahead of his eventual stud career.
