Comparing past and present champions can cause a few arguments, but if Winx can go on and win her third Cox Plate she must rank as Australia’s greatest racehorse.
With two consecutive Cox Plates under her belt she has already equalled greats like Phar Lap, Tobin Bronze, Sunline, Northerly and So You Think.
Waller makes no secret that her target is the 2017 Cox Plate. Another win in the Moonee Valley Group 1 will bring her equal to the great Kingston Town and she will become just the second horse to win three Cox Plates in a row.
Make no mistake I am a fan of Black Caviar and rate the mare an absolute champion. Her feat to go unbeaten in 25 career starts was phenomenal and lot of the credit must go to trainer Peter Moody.
Moods did a super job in placing her in the right company and amazingly her 25 wins were all on a “good’’ track. Not once was she tested in soft or heavy going and the longest trip she won over was 1400m, once. The rest of her wins were either 1000m or 1200m.
Winx has won her last 17 starts and should edge closer to 25 wins this preparation. Yes she has lost races, albeit early in her career. She has won races from 1100m out to 2400m and had victories on good, soft and heavy, for mine that versatility puts her above Black Caviar.
Black Caviar did win at Royal Ascot and the possibility of a third Cox Plate is probably the only thing that has stopped Winx from heading overseas. Once she notches win number three in October, the world will be her oyster.
