Apprentice jumps jockey Tom Buckley was 100m away from joining a long list of riders that mistook the winning post when riding at a jumps meeting at Worcester in the UK overnight.
Buckley was riding $4 favourite Ranco and when he presented the gelding to win the race, it all looked over. That was until the half furlong pole (100m mark) when Buckley stood up in the irons and half saluted, thinking he had won, but not realising there was still 100m to go. Thankfully, Ranco had plenty on them and was able to fend off Nowyouvebinandunit to win.
At the time of writing, the Stewards Report wasn’t available but no doubt they would have had a quiet word to Buckley and not make the same mistake in the future.
