Trainer James Cummings could give Anamoe another run before the Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Anamoe is a chance to back-up in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes as trainer James Cummings mulls over how to best prepare the star colt for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

The Godolphin three-year-old has set up a thrilling showdown with benchmark mare Verry Elleegant, All-Star Mile winner Zaaki and emerging talent Montefilia following his facile Rosehill Guineas win on Saturday.

Cummings feels the horse may need one more run to top him off for his grand final in a race that has traditionally been tough for three-year-olds to win.

“The interesting thing about the Queen Elizabeth is, in a very short space of time, just over five months, he goes from carrying 49-1/2 (kilos) against Verry Ellegant in a Cox Plate to carrying 56 against Verry Ellegant in a Queen Elizabeth.

“That has historically made it very hard for lots of three-year-olds who have tried it and I have sometimes wondered if they might need the extra run to be able to do it.

“We might consider running in a Tancred next week, or whether he might need the extra run in an ATC Derby.

“We will have to talk about it but all I know is, plenty of really good three-year-olds have tried it and it’s been hard to do.”

Godolphin had a good day out at Rosehill, winning the Guineas with Anamoe and producing Emanate for her first black-type victory in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m).

It was an important milestone for the daughter of Lonhro and multiple Group 1 winner Guelph, given her pedigree.

“She is one of the best-bred mares going around,” Cummings said.

“That’s a huge result to get her first stakes win on the board.”

The Tancred Stakes (2400m) is at Rosehill next Saturday with the ATC Australian Derby (2400m) a week later and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 9.
