Australian gallopers Without A Fight, Antino, and Recommendation had a forgettable outing at the Hong Kong International Races on Sunday, failing to make an impact in their respective events.
Melbourne Cup hero Without A Fight was a shadow of his best in the Hong Kong Vase, finishing 16 lengths off the winner.
Trainer Sam Freedman called the performance “disappointing,” admitting, “It’s probably the first time he’s put in a run like that.”
Jockey Mark Zahra was equally blunt: “He didn’t finish off.” Veterinary checks will now determine if there’s an underlying issue, with Freedman noting the gelding “laboured late” and “wanted to get in on one leg.”
In the Sprint, Recommendation struggled against the world’s best sprinters, finishing third-last. “He just struggled to cover the pressure today over 1200m,” Zahra said.
Antino, Australia’s hope in the Mile, was 11th after being hampered by interference. “He ran well but hit some interference at the 300m,” said jockey Blake Shinn.
While the horses faltered, Australian jockeys shone, with Zac Purton and James McDonald both riding Group 1 winners on the international stage.
