Group 1 Australian Oaks winner Autumn Angel won’t chase the Caulfield Cup this spring. Trainer Peter Moody is taking a conservative approach with her targets.
Currently in pre-training in Queensland, Autumn Angel will return to Pakenham soon. Moody, who visited her last week, said she’s in good condition, benefiting from Queensland’s warmer weather.
Moody aims to keep Autumn Angel in mares’ class, avoiding high-stakes races like the Caulfield Cup this year. “He’ll let us know shortly what he’s thinking but he’s looking at keeping her in mares class and not tackling races such as the Caulfield Cup this year,” said syndicate manager Wylie Dalziel.
Target races include the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes, with a potential nomination for the Cox Plate if her form justifies it. After a strong Oaks win, she finished second in the G3 Rough Habit Plate and ninth in the Queensland Derby, hampered by a slippery track.
“We leave it to Moods and his team and we let them steer the ship and work in with his camp,” Dalziel added.
