Black Caviar’s final foal passes away

Another element of sadness has been added to the loss of legendary mare Black Caviar with the news that the foal she gave birth to has also died.

Owners of the champion mare confirmed the loss of the colt by four-time Australian Champion Stallion, Snitzel, on Monday.

“The owners are saddened to advise that Black Caviar’s foal, a colt sired by Snitzel, passed away last night,” the owners said in a statement.

“He received around-the-clock, world-class veterinary care, but unfortunately could not be saved.

“The ownership group would like to thank the entire veterinary team who dedicated their time and efforts to caring for Black Caviar and her colt.

“The ownership group would also like to acknowledge and thank the Australian public and the racing public globally for the many tributes to Black Caviar.

“She was much loved and admired.”

Black Caviar was humanely euthanised on Saturday, the day before her 18th birthday, owing to a severe hoof condition.

The Snitzel colt was her ninth foal and her second that was the result of a visit to Snitzel, who helped her produce Out Of Caviar, who did not get to the races, in 2016.

Five of Black Caviar’s foals got to the racetrack with Oscietra (Exceed And Excel), Prince Of Caviar (Sebring), Invincible Caviar (I Am Invincible) and I Am Caviar (I Am Invincible) all having visited the winner’s stall.

Persian Caviar is a three-year-old Written Tycoon filly in the care of Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman who is yet to race, while she also had a colt by The Autumn Sun who turned one on Sunday, meaning he shares the same birthday as his mother.
