Blake Shinn reunited with his Queensland Derby winner, Warmonger, during a trial at Cranbourne on Monday. Warmonger won the opening 1200m heat, clocking 1:13.64, in a trial that featured top horses like Place Du Carrousel and Circle of Fire. Despite the successful trial, Michael Dee is expected to ride Warmonger this spring as connections seek a lightweight jockey.
Warmonger’s campaign kicks off in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) on September 14, followed by the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup. Co-trainer Mick Price emphasised the importance of continuity with a rider, confirming discussions with Dee due to Warmonger’s expected 53 or 53.5 kilograms in the Caulfield Cup.
Price is optimistic about Warmonger’s preparation but is cautious about targeting the Melbourne Cup, noting the race’s gruelling nature. Currently, Warmonger is listed at $15 for the Caulfield Cup 2024 and $18 for the Melbourne Cup 2024 with online betting sites.
In other trial news, Western Australian star Bustling made his first appearance under the Price-Kent stable, finishing third behind Estriella. Australasian Oaks winner Vibrant Sun also returned, with a likely start in the G2 Let’s Elope Stakes on September 14 as part of her spring campaign.
