Bold spring plan starts with Carlyon Stakes

Fresh from dominating the PB Lawrence Stakes meeting at Caulfield, Ben, Will and JD Hayes have turned their attention to this Saturday’s Moonee Valley meeting.

The Lindasy Park training team, who won four races last Saturday, including the Group 2 Lawrence Stakes, will be represented in the day’s feature, the $175,000 Listed Carlyon Stakes, by flying filly Bold Bastille.

Ben Hayes chose that weight-for-age 1000-metre event over last Saturday’s set-weights-and-penalties Quezette Stakes (1100m), which will double as an audition for the $750,000 Group 1 Moir Stakes over the same course on September 7.

“She’ll run in the Carlyon, I think we’ll have a go at that and have a look, because she deserves it,” Ben Hayes said.

“She goes well at The Valley. She’ll get no weight. We’re really happy with her.”

The daughter of Brazen Beau will be chasing a fourth-straight win, having not raced since her dominant win in the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Rush (1000m) at Bendigo on April 13.

She was due to run in the $1 million The Showdown (1200m) on April 27 but was a late scratching after a mishap at the barriers.

Bold Bastille’s only defeat came when sixth as favourite in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at her second racetrack appearance.

She has had two jumpouts under star jockey Jamie Kah in preparation for the return, including a soft win over 800m at Flemington on August 9.

“Jamie was really happy, she said she gave her a great feel and did everything right,” Hayes said.

Bold Bastille is among 12 initial entries for the Carlyon Stakes, which have been extended until Tuesday morning, with fellow three-year-old Coleman, Caulfield Guineas winner Griff, William Reid Stakes runner-up Johnny Rocker and brilliant last-start winner Mornington Glory among her potential rivals.
