A deliberate act of arson at Caulfield Racecourse has caused significant damage to the Norman Robinson stand, as confirmed by CCTV footage that captured a man intentionally setting the fire early Tuesday morning.
The footage shows the individual strategically placing a wheelie bin filled with paper on the upper deck of the stand and igniting it.
This resulted in a rapid spread of flames throughout the timber structure, heavily damaging key areas like the 1876 Bar and the Medallion Bar.
Melbourne Racing Club Chairman John Kanga addressed the incident, stating, “The grandstand will not be demolished, it will be rebuilt,” affirming the club’s commitment to preserve its heritage despite the destruction.
“We’re gutted as a club,” he added.
“We’re in a very good position. We will rebuild and we’re keen to ensure their heritage aspect is covered.”
The police investigation into the arson is ongoing, and the racecourse is gearing up for major events.
Fire services’ swift response averted any injuries, and alternative arrangements are being made to host the upcoming Caulfield Heath Twilight event at Mornington Racecourse.
