Corstens considering another Perth assault

The Astrologist delivered Corstens one of the highlights of his training career in the 2022 TABtouch-Gold Rush, where he held off a late surge from Kissonallforcheeks.

Corstens then travelled the gelding to Dubai and the United Kingdom, where he ran credible races in the Al Quoz Sprint (1200m) and Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee (1207m) respectively.

The eight-year-old was unplaced in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Corstens said he would chase good ground for his stable veteran.

“The Astrologist didn’t handle the heavy track,” Corstens told TABradio.

“He might be looking for Perth again.”

Perth could also be on the agenda for progressive sprinter Baraqiel, who finished third to Moby Dick at Flemington on Saturday.

The six-year-old made his debut earlier this year and won his first four starts.

He has been placed in his two subsequent starts.

Corstens said he was pleased with Baraqiel’s effort and felt he could progress to feature races.

“I actually think Baraqiel might be a Perth horse as well,” he said.

“We’re going to try and get him there if we can.

“The entries are in a month, so as long as everything goes well, we will put those into play again.”

The Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Gold Rush (1400m) on November 30 and December 14 are likely targets for the pair.
