Cox Plate 2024 still on the menu for Broadsiding

James Cummings has kept the door open for a potential Cox Plate appearance for Broadsiding, despite the colt’s unexpected loss as the odds-on favorite in the $3 million Caulfield Guineas on Saturday.

Sent out as the $1.80 favourite with betting apps, Broadsiding couldn’t make up ground after settling toward the back of the field, leaving Private Life to claim an upset victory after leading the race from start to finish. Cummings inspected the colt post-race and remains confident that Broadsiding is building towards peak performance.

“There’s no doubt he’ll improve from this run,” Cummings stated. “He’s on the verge of hitting his best.”

Cummings expressed satisfaction with the horse’s effort, noting, “He pulled up really well and ran a solid race. Credit to the winner—he led from the start and proved hard to catch. Broadsiding did his best, hugging the rail early and coming wide late.”

The Cox Plate 2024 remains a viable option, as Cummings expects further improvement. “He’ll bounce back strong—he gave it everything and finished well, even though things didn’t go his way,” Cummings said.

Broadsiding has drifted in the market for the Cox Plate out to $8 from $4.50 with online betting sites, with the Japanese contender Prognosis leading the market at $4. Via Sistina and Pride Of Jenni follow close behind at $4.50 and $5.50.
