The Moonee Valley Racing Club (MVRC) has announced the introduction of a new race in honour of dual Cox Plate champion So You Think. The inaugural So You Think Stakes will take place on Saturday, September 7, adding another highlight to the Group 1 Moir Stakes Night.
This new race will feature a prize pool of $200,000 and will be contested over 1500 meters under set-weights-and-penalties conditions.
So You Think’s remarkable career includes victories in the 2009 and 2010 Cox Plates. In 2009, he triumphed as a three-year-old with Glen Boss as his jockey, and he secured his second victory in 2010 with Steven Arnold riding. Throughout his career, So You Think amassed 10 Group 1 victories—five in Australia and five in Ireland and the UK—earning a total of $10.7 million in prize money under the guidance of legendary trainers Bart Cummings and Aidan O’Brien.
Charlotte Mills, MVRC Head of Racing, commented on the strategic timing of the new race: “With the move of the Group 2 Ladbrokes Feehan Stakes to Friday, September 27, the So You Think Stakes is strategically positioned as a key target early in spring.”
“So You Think is considered one of the greatest-ever winners of the W.S. Cox Plate, a two-time champion who might have won three or four times had he remained in Australia. Now is the perfect time to honor him with his own race here at The Valley.”
Mills also highlighted So You Think’s enduring legacy: “His on-track ability was matched by his stunning looks and charisma off the track, and it is no surprise that he continues to produce Group 1 winners at stud.”
The So You Think Stakes promises to be a fitting tribute to a horse whose impact on racing continues to be felt both on and off the track.
