A dramatic two-horse fall in the opening race on day two of The Championships has dampened the mood at Randwick with jockey Andrew Adkins taken to hospital for precautionary tests.

In a roughly run event, the Hayes and Dabernig team came out on top with Power Scheme ($7.50) fighting strongly to win the Listed Kings Of Sydney Sport Mile (1600m) by a short half-head over the fast-finishing Foxborough ($12) with Extraordinary ($41) another 1-3/4 lengths away.

But there were no celebrations with all attention focused on Adkins who fell heavily from War Baron in the final 100 metres of the race.

Glyn Schofield aboard Persan was also dislodged but got straight to his feet and quickly went to Adkins’ aid.

The young jockey was conscious and attended to by paramedics who took him to hospital for precautionary tests.

Winner Power Scheme came through a strong two-year-old event at Mornington, the same race co-trainer David Hayes used with Muswellbrook who was runner-up to stablemate Futooh in the corresponding Randwick race 12 months ago.

“He’s by Fiorente and I think he’s a horse of the future, a Derby colt, and we’re very excited he can step up like this,” Hayes said.

“If he pulls up well we might back him up into the Champagne next week.”
