Anthony and Sam Freedman have taken over the training of Kahma Lass

Lightly raced New Zealand mare Kahma Lass is set to have her first start for new trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman in a stakes race at Caulfield.

The former Jamie Richards-trained mare is scheduled to have her first start for her new stable in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) on Saturday.

Kahma Lass joined the Freedmans after Richards announced he was taking up a training position in Hong Kong in the new season.

Richards had his last runners in New Zealand last month.

Brad Taylor, racing manager for the Freedman stable, said Kahma Lass, a three-time winner from 10 career starts, had settled in well since transferring from the Flemington stable to their Pinecliff base on the Mornington Peninsula.

“She spent a lot of time in our Flemington stable when Jamie travelled her over here,” Taylor said.

“She’s settled in really well to our Pinecliff stable. She was a bit of a funny eater at times at Flemington, so that’s why they sent her down to the farm and she hasn’t left an oat since she’s been there.”

A Group 1 winner of the Thousand Guineas in New Zealand as a three-year-old, Kahma Lass won the Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield last spring.

Kahma Lass had two runs for Richards during the autumn, finishing fifth to then stablemate Probabeel in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield before finishing third to Flying Mascot in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) on February 26.

Taylor said Kahma Lass had had two jump-outs to prepare for her return.

“Her first jump-out was only just OK at Woolamai but her next one at Balnarring last week was much better,” Taylor said.

“She’s a stakes winner at the track and distance and fingers crossed she can repeat the dose.”
