Lady Of Camelot might have been beaten in last Saturday’s $3m Magic Millions Sunlight, but the team associated with last year’s Golden Slipper heroine was far from disappointed in her.
The second placing behind Private Harry in the 1100-metre event even convinced them that the daughter of Written Tycoon might be ready for assignments over further than she has previously been tested.
Lady Of Camelot jumped only fairly from the inside gate in The Sunlight, which may have been a contributing factor in her being held up for an extended period, and Sir Own Glenn’s racing and bloodstock manager Steve O’Connor said she might be ready for a step out in trip.
“She bounced out of the run in good order and she’s at Newington (Farm) for a few weeks,” O’Connor said of the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained three-year-old.
“Funnily enough, she maybe lacks a bit of that tenacious early speed that she used to have as a two-year-old so I think we’ll maybe look to go up in distance a bit this year and races like the Surround Stakes might be on the agenda.”
The 1400m Surround Stakes, a Group 1 race worth $750,000, will be run at Randwick on March 1.
Lady Of Camelot is yet to race beyond 1200m, the distance at which she won the Golden Slipper and finished second in the Blue Diamond Stakes and Coolmore Stud Stakes at Group 1 level.
She also finished third in the Group 1 Moir Stakes over 1000m and has three wins and four minor placings from 10 starts for $5,649,000 in earnings.
