It’s all love for Grantham’s Belmont Oaks bid

Luvnwar’s strong workout yesterday (Thursday) has added to Michael Grantham’s confidence leading into Saturday’s Belmont Oaks (2000m).

One of two horses in the Listed race prepared by Grantham, Luvnwar emerged as a leading contender following her victory in the Belmont Guineas (1600m).

She’s attracted significant backing and currently holds the position as hot favourite, her Tabtouch odds firming from an initial $2.20 to $1.90 with betting sites.

Grantham said Luvnwar is in perfect shape to claim her second straight Listed win.

“She has come through the Belmont Guineas run really well and hasn’t put a foot wrong,” Grantham said on Tabradio.

“Her last workout yesterday I gave her a good dig and her heart rate just keeps getting lower and lower.

“It was pretty good work and I’m happy where I’ve got her.”

Luvnwar races against nine opponents in the Belmont Oaks and has drawn barrier two for Pat Carbery.

The diminutive jockey is chasing his second Belmont Oaks, 17 years after winning his first with Parc D’Amour.

Grantham rates Luvnwar superior to his second stringer Antique Dream.

The Pierro filly broke her maiden status at York and since finished second twice at Bunbury and Belmont.

Chris Parnham takes the ride with William Pike opting to partner second favourite, Petrouchka.

Antique Dream is on the third line of betting at $6 and jumps from gate five.

Grantham says Luvnwar has the edge over Antique Dream.

“She’s not as genuine as I would have liked,” Grantham said.

“I think maybe her run is coming to an end.

“It would be pretty cool if she did knock her (Luvnwar) off, but I can’t really see it happening.

“They are two different horses.”
