Annabel Neasham’s My Oberon has secured the talented jockey Joao Moreira for its upcoming run in the Group 1 Champions Mile in Hong Kong on April 30th. The Irish-bred gelding will take on Hong Kong’s local champions, Golden Sixty and California Spangle, in the $3.8 million event, marking the only Australian-trained runner in the Champions Day meeting at Sha Tin.
My Oberon is set to arrive in Hong Kong on Monday evening and will be fresh off the back of his narrow second-place finish to Mr Brightside in the G1 Doncaster Mile. With Moreira onboard, the Neasham-trained horse has a strong chance of success in the prestigious race.
Moreira, also known as the “Magic Man,” rode in Hong Kong for nine years and won four premierships. He still holds the record for the most number of winners in a season. Additionally, he has won the Champions Mile twice before, riding Able Friend in 2015 and Maurice in 2016.
Currently enjoying his time in Sydney, Moreira had an exceptional day at Randwick on Saturday, with a treble win, including his win aboard Militarize in the Champagne Stakes.
Neasham and Moreira will be looking to combine their skills and experience to secure a win for My Oberon at the prestigious Hong Kong event. With the gelding’s excellent form and Moreira’s outstanding record, the partnership is hoping to make their mark on the race.
