Three-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy was at Mornington on Wednesday to kick off the spring campaign for Matt Laurie’s colt, Coleman, the Golden Slipper runner-up.
Coleman ran in an 800m heat, finishing fifth out of six under light riding.
“He seems to have come back a ready-to-go three-year-old. It was just a nice, cruisy hit-out there this morning, but he felt in good order.” McEvoy told racing.com.
McEvoy will ride Coleman in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at The Valley on September 7.
Coleman is set to trial at Cranbourne on August 19 and will also contest the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m). With a 52kg weight in the Moir, McEvoy sees potential.
“He could just be the nice, emerging three-year-old sprinter.”
McEvoy is also eager to ride Celestial Legend, a winner of the Randwick Guineas and Doncaster Mile, in upcoming trials.
