Sheep may rule the paddocks of Kojonup for most of the year, however, this Saturday the farming town’s attention shifts to another set of hooves – thoroughbreds.
While Great Southern farmers are often focused on sheep prices at the Katanning Regional Saleyards or preparing for harvest, local cackle this week has turned to the prices of gallopers vying for success in the anticipated 2025 Kojonup Cup (1770m).
The annual thoroughbred race meeting, hosted by the Kojonup Race Club, is held at Wandecla, about 30km west of town.
The atmosphere of the recognised country race day has grown since the first picnic meeting in 1875, with the overwhelming community support making the day a highlight of Kojonup’s social calendar.
With more than 1000 racegoers anticipated to head trackside, the event provides a great chance for the whole community to come together and connect, Kojonup Race Club Secretary Andrea McGuire said.
“The Wandecla Races are much more than just a race day, they’re a chance for the community to get together providing a great social occasion for the town,” she said.
“We are a volunteer-based club and it is massive the amount of support we have from the community who invest their time because of how passionate they are.”
The overwhelming support from the community was on display last year when the races didn’t go ahead due to high temperatures. Despite no horses running, the club was still packed out to enjoy the activities and it provided a chance for social connection.
Alongside the dedicated volunteers, Kojonup Agriculture Supplies have been proudly supporting the Wandecla Races for more than 20 years.
“We’re proud to be involved in such a large community event that brings locals and visitors together to connect,” owner Matt Atkinson said.
“The races are massive for the town, and the strong network of volunteers that make it happen showcases what a small community can band together and achieve.”
With the fields being locked away later this week, the town is building in anticipation for the big race day and looking forward to the social standout event in Kojonup.
