Kaiser Sun was on his best behaviour at Flemington and it showed as the short-priced favourite romped home an easy winner in the Flemington 1840-2014 Handicap.

At his last start two weeks ago the Danerich gelding was fractious when loading into the barriers but still won easily.

On Wednesday, his manners were much better and his finish left the rest of the field in his wake in the 1000m sprint.

Kaiser Sun, the $2.40 favourite, defeated Riviera Red ($26) by a three-quarters of a length with Primitive Man ($6) another long neck away third.

The training team of Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra picked up the lightly raced four-year-old at a Magic Millions sale for $42,000 – a bargain buy with his prizemoney now standing at more than $120,000.

But Ellerton was trying hard to temper his joy, saying Kaiser Sun has had problems with his knees.

As a result the horse does not do too much fast galloping, preferring the water walker and some pace work.

“While he is sound we will keep going with him,” said Ellerton.

“The first thing is to see how he pulls up.”

But he is confident Kaiser Sun will go on to better things.

Jockey Chris Symons, who was also on Kaiser Sun when he won at Flemington on December 14, said the gelding was a much more relaxed horse.

“He jumped as well as he did last start, but with that race under his belt, he was able to relax under me.

“His manners were a lot better.”
