In a noteworthy achievement for his career, Australian trainer Mark Newnham celebrated his maiden win in Hong Kong as Happy Hero secured a victory at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.
Previously securing over 400 victories in Australia, Newnham’s recent move to Hong Kong marked a new chapter in his illustrious career.
His connection with Happy Hero is deep-rooted; he had ridden Pierro, Happy Hero’s sire, for renowned trainer Gai Waterhouse.
“Iβm just pleased to get one on the board, I thought it would be last Sunday but anyway, those two will have to wait. Iβm really excited.” Newnham said.
“I only got back from the Sydney two-year-old sale this afternoon, rushed home, got changed and came straight here, so it was worth the effort.”
“To come to Hong Kong to train is something Iβve wanted to do for a long time and to get the first one (winner) is very exciting.”
Despite having saddled only 12 runners in the initial Hong Kong meetings, Newnham’s patient strategy has reaped dividends with this landmark victory.
